My air filters just came! Great shipping speed from Performance Nissan at www.mynismo.com (aka www.performancenissanparts.com)
I am right at 50k miles with my HR, so I thought I'd go ahead and replace my air filters. Filters look of good quality, nothing beats OEM stuff.

The filters on the left were red when I bought the car.

They might last forever, but the suck as filters. I installed one on my E30 M3 some years ago, and after a few thousand miles had to take apart some of the intake tract to replace a gasket. I noticed the entire intake (AFM, all the piping, plenum, and 4 throttles) were coated with oily, sticky grit. I had to remove everything from the head outwards to clean out the grit (mostly fine sand), which was a 6-hour task. The car had 30K miles, and had never had that issue with the OEM paper filter, and never had it since (50K more miles). All the other K&N claims (better flow, straightening the airflow, etc.) are nothing but pure marketing BS. I do have a set of oiled foam filters on one of my Alfa Romeo Spider's, and those work great.

What do you mean? My problem with the K&N had nothing to do with cleaning/re-oiling the filter, it was about all the grit that blew thru the filter like it wasn't even there. Piston rings and valve guides don't last long with that sort of grit being sucked into the engine.

I too clean and re oil them about once every 10k miles. My oil analysis comes back great on 3k mile OCIs as well so I'm fairly confident they're doing their job...
I did a Google search back when I had the problem, and there were 100's of hits citing the same problem with dirty intake tracts, as well as damaged AFM's/MAF's. Considering the K&N's offer no (not even a tiny) performance advantage, there's no reason not to stick with OEM paper filter panels. Granted, I'm in a somewhat gritty environment, as Florida is a sandy place, but that's grit of a large size compared to most, so if that gets through the filter, one can guess everything else will, too.

Really!
I haven't been strucken with a bad K&N! I've had mines on for 15k in Haywaii which Has the richest soil...it's like everywhere wash your car and the wind blows there's a sheen of red over your car. That's how thick the air is here on some days...it's fine really fine though so I'll give you that...
Well document the status of the stockers.
