07 VQ35HR... chatter at 1600rpm, low oil pressure, P0024 DTC... HELP
So my 07 350z 5AT at 112k miles has thrown a P0024 code (B - Timing over advanced - system performance Bank 2)
Cold oil pressure is decent, high rpm oil pressure is decent, warm idle and low rpm pressure is low. (ACCORDING TO THE OEM GAUGE )
There is a rattle in the front upper portion of the engine if you hold the revs perfectly still between 1500-1800 rpm. It comes and goes as you hold the revs, and shifts from left bank to right bank. It goes away if you gently increase throttle, or if you gently release throttle. At any other rpm or as you pass 1600-1700 rpm accelerating or revving even slowly, the noise doesn’t happen. The noise is not there until the oil is hot, when cold it is silent.
the factory gauge is reading maybe 6-10psi at most when warm and at idle, idle speed is 650-750rpm or so. At 2000rpm oil pressure is just a hair under 30psi when hot. At 5-6k rpm it is at 60psi. Engine runs smoothly, pulls well, and if you don’t hold rpm VERY still at around 1600 you will not hear so much as a peep from that engine.
Do do you think the paper oil galley gaskets could be causing all of this?
Any other ideas from seasoned folks that one might consider experts?
Ive heard timing chain rattle, this is not timing chain rattle. I’ve heard rod knock, piston slap, locked up
lifters, broken rocker arms, and ruined cam journals, and this is not that!
Im thinking VTC systems are chattering, drivers side cam sprocket retarder has failed, and low oil pressure and supply to the front case is the culprit...
your thoughts?

Have you checked your oil level yet? If not, do so. Low oil can cause some of the symptoms you are describing. Could be dirty oil as well, but with low oil pressure, my guess is low oil level. These are the best case scenarios.

While your oil pressure does seem a little low P0024 is for the exhaust timing magnetic retarder. It seems less likely to be affected by oil pressure than the intake cam phaser P0011/p0021. Get a copy of the FSM if you want to diagnose the issue. There is a thread in general right now detailing the official ways to get it.
It wouldn't hurt to verify the oil pressure and it maybe could cause the problem but the gasket fix is enough work I would verify the sensors and exhaust retarder first. After checking your oil level get a oil pressure gauge and verify the that the OEM gauge/sensor is correct. Harbor freight has an inexpensive gauge with the correct BSPT fitting. Do not put an NTP fitting in the oil pressure sensor hole it will damage the BSPT threads.

Just did a penzoil ultra 5w30 oil change with a Nissan OEM filter. Level is dead nuts on the money.
The rattle noise is my biggest concern! That’s what I’m trying to figure out.

Here's a [LINK] to the TSB describing the P0024 (also P0014) issue.

UPDATE!
So the lone P0024 code is fixed, I replaced the VTC cover housing due to failed electromagnetic cam retarder on exhaust gear.
BUT, the noise remains... they are non-related.

6-10psi on the stock gauge would highly concern me and i would park my car until i could test it with a real gauge.
But that's the hallmark sign of the gaskets failing, When i got my car i was at around 8PSI and after i did my gaskets im now around 30psi on the stock gauge @ idle
i also had the chatter until i replaced the gaskets, Prob the top end being starved of oil at idle.
