Default Light weight rims for under $1000--need recommendation

Hello all,
I am on budget and wish to get a new set of 17" rims (just rim and use stock tire) that reasonable light and cost around $1000. So far I am looking at Kosei K1 racing rims as an alternative. The rim probably weight around 20 lbs for 17 ". I am new to this hobby and need expert advices. The rims must have off set between 30 mm(stock) to max at 37 mm (as recommend by sport compact mag when they put modify the Z). In the mean time I will keeping looking. Thanks for your help.

That's about all you'll find. Lightweight rims @ 250 a rim is very hard to find. Maybe if you wanna go 16"...

16s are not likely to fit over the Z's brakes.

Check these out:

Forged. One piece aluminum. They weigh 16lbs, at $197/each. Here's the link: Enkei Bortex RPM2

I would take Kosei over Enkei... My friends have had problems with Enkei rims bending really easily.

Default Kosei rims

Hi,
Thanks guys for your comments. Do you guys know what is the offset on the 17" Kosei K1 racing rims? Do I need spacer for this wheel? How much does one weight? A friend of mine has a set on his 3000GT and it looks very nice.

...volk gram lights (single piece) come in 17s and can be had for $1000 (just rims of course)...check out www.importhookup.com...someone always has specials on them. If not, the black pro N1s are also about the same price and are supposed to be light (they are the ones that were on the Sport Compact Car 350Z)...there's options, you just have to look around. I believe 17 one piece OZ Superleggera's (either 15 or 17lbs) are also in the $1000-$1200 range, but from what I understand they are sometimes hard to find since they are in great demand...just look around.

Kosei K1 in 17x7.5" weigh 16.4 lbs, I weighed mine myself. They come in either 35 or 45mm offset in 17". 7.5 is the only width offered, which I'd think would be a little narrow on a Z. Widest tire you'd want to put on there would be a 245... 255 maybe but that would be outside manufacturer's specs.

As far as those Enkei's go, I fell in love with that wheel the first time I saw it. I love the shiny but darkened look, a-la BMW M5. They are lightweight and the price is right, not to mention you can get them in a number of different widths and offsets.

I've never heard of recurring problems with Enkeis, my friend used Enkei V1s for years on his SCCA Solo 1 Camaro. Another cool thing is that Enkei is made in the USA, good ol' Detroit Iron (well aluminum actually.)

If I were in the market for wheels right now I'd be getting the Enkeis hands down. In fact, I'd be up for selling my Koseis if you are interested. They are anthractie (unavailable for purchase anymore, discontinued) 17x7.5 45mm offset, in perfect condition, not a scratch or bend or ding on them, they have never touched a curb, knock on wood. Let me know if you are interested.

EDIT:
In your original post you mentioned offset. The correct offset for a wheel depends on its width. The stock offset is only valid for wheels that are the same width as stock. Going with a wider wheel means you need less offset.

Some other lightweight/inexpensive wheels you might want to check out are various knockoff brands like Rota, Konig, etc, they have some pretty light wheels out. Also the Volk Gramlight. It looks like a 5spoke Advan RG, not the best looking wheel around but it gets the job done. The Buddy Club P-1 is the wheel that the Kosei K1 is based on, but it has a lip on it which I think is really cool, and is available in a much wider selection of sizes and offsets than the K1, but costs a little bit more than the K1.

For an inexpensive lightweight wheel I would also suggest the Ray's Gram lights. The Enkei Tuning line of wheels is also very good. I'd be very interested in finding out which model wheels that people were having problems with bends. Enkei Tuning line of wheels are made in Japan. My hookup is pretty good. He really works with Club racers and stuff with his product pricing. I could give you his info if you're interested.

I'm gonna run the RPF1 on my RX7 for the track and would like to make sure this won't be a problem. I know these to be track proven so any additional info on what Enkei models people have had problems bending.

On the rx7club.com there was a group buy going on for the Gram lights 57C's and pros. Might want to check that out. I think you'll just need to do a search and contact that guy. All the guys on the board were real happy with the pricing.

G35 SAGE,

Would you be able to give me more information on the group buy on the Gram Lights? I am interested in getting group buy pricing on the Gram Light 57Pro's. Do you have a contact??? I tried a search on that board and contacted a couple of leads...but didn't see any specific posts talking of the group buy you mention...

Thanks

HE was offerring the group buy in the vendor/classified section. I'll look into the offset specs for the Pros. Due to the fact that these vehicles use such low offsets we may need to special order these.

Also, I had always thought that the Kosei's were made in Japan. I have a set of the K1's and was pretty darn sure that they were made in JApan.

If possible to find in a particular wheel I would really suggest going 9's and 10's on the G35 and 350z. It will allow for a more aggressive tire sizing.

I'll get a price from him and PM it to you after getting the appropriate offsets.

See ya.

G35 SAGE,

Thanks...I would greatly appreciate you getting me in contact with this guy...especially if he is still running this group buy you mention. Do you know what the current conversion rate is for yen? I assume that is the denomination mentioned on the site? The 10" is 58,000 and the 9" is 56,000.???

Thanks much, I look forward to hearing back from you.

By the way...I can't read Japanese...but the chart is set up in a way that leads me to believe the offsets listed are standard...but then in the bottom table it looks as if various offsets beyond this are available with special order. Is this the case? And can you special order colors other than the Grey and Bronze?

Sorry...you seem to hang with the RX-7 guys that seem to know more about these?

Thanks

As of close today, 119.937 yen to the dollar, or 120 for simplicity's sake.
