Installed wider tires on stock rims
I just got new tires installed. I thought the stock tires on the Z didn't have quite the right look to them. It looked too much like a family car. I didn't want to spend a ton of money, so I kept the stock wheels. I also won't have this car in rain or snow, so a stickier tire was the way to go.
I went with Kumho Ecsta Supra 712s. 245/45/17 in front and 255/45/17 in back. The tires fit great on the stock 8" and 7.5" wheels. The extra 20mm (over the stock 225s and 235s) looks great on the car. No rubbing front or back, and no sidewall buldge. I have attached a before and after pic, although the pics aren't very good. I will take more this weekend.
Total cost was less than $500 including install. I haven't gotten on it yet to see how well they hook up. I do notice they follow tracks in the road a bit, which I didn't notice before. The ride of the car isn't any harsher or cushier than before.

Hey! If you want sticky tires like that try the kumho's in the MX version they have a tread wear of 220 instead of the 712 with a tread wear of 280, and they are a much larger tread block with less void area. I have tried the 712's on my turbo esprit and they were too hard to generate heat in them so they slid around corners kinda not too nice( not good feedback on the sliding edge of control) If anyone has tried the MX's please post and tell how they stick.

I had the Kumhos on my 93 RZ-7 and...
hated them. They had very little bite.
I bought them because of reccomendations and price. I was very dissapointed. They did, however, do fairly well in the rain.
I would like to hear what you think of them on the Z.

Kumho has several different Ecsta (711, 712, and MX) the ones you want I think are the MX's. I've had the 712's and they are too hard, I've seen the MX's at an autox and they look much softer. Does anyone have any personal Experience with the MX's?

They seem to have better grip than the stock tires when they are warm. The RE40s would spin all the way through first if I got frisky with the gas pedal. The 712s hook up much better when they are warm. They are not as sticky when cold. They might be equal with the RE40s, but perform better because of the extra footprint. I am very happy with them for the price. (100 bucks from tirerack) The 255 looks perfect in back and the tread pattern looks good.
I haven't had the opportunity to see how they do in turns yet, I was pretty happy with the RE40s in that aspect. While I had them on, I never found the limits of the car in a turn. I'll have to see how the 712s do next time we get a warm day.
I almost sprung for the MXs or Yoko A520Ls. If anyone has run the MXs I would like hearing from them.
I haven't had the opportunity to see how they do in turns yet, I was pretty happy with the RE40s in that aspect. While I had them on, I never found the limits of the car in a turn. I'll have to see how the 712s do next time we get a warm day.

So you fitted the 17x7.5 with 245's and 17x8 with 255's? Man you are brave to be the first to try them.. It looks great btw. I wonder what we can fit on stock 18's now.
18x8 = 235/40/18 front?
18x8 = 255/40/18 rear?

I questioned Discount tire about the width of using 275's on 8" rims and they responded that Chevy's Camero SS uses the same width on 17". So far no problems on/off exit ramps at high speeds am waiting for spring to try out at Putnam Park.
