Default Replacing Rear Tires - How many miles?

Just brought my car in since the rear passenger side tire was completely bald after just 8k miles. Left rear seemed pretty good still.

Of course dealer calls and says both need to be replaced at approx $300 each.

I have an 04 AT Z. Others out there, how many miles before you had to have rear tires replaced ?

Thanks for any help. Gotta go pick it up today and want to see if this was normal.

Mine last about 10K miles (the original Potenza RE040). I then tried Pilots and also lasted 10K. I went back to Potenzas and, guess what, 10K. All the shops tell me they are worn evenly and straight, just worn. And they are, like slicks... They say I drive too hard. I don't think so, but what the heck.

My next set is another set of Potenzas I already have in my garage. Then I am moving on to something a little harder...

I just replaced mine last week at 25,000 miles and I do a lot of fun hard driving on nice twisties. They had about 3k left on them so I got just about everything I could out of them.

I replaced them with 265/40 Potenza RE050A's. Gotta lay off those burn outs and save your tread for those fun curves.

I really don't know why mine only last 10K. It seems very short to me. I do mostly city driving, never track, never "burn out". I do acelerate off the green lights but hardly ever loose traction, just pull hard. And turns, well, as much as you can do in the city at 30, 40 or 50 mph...

I also have noticed that usually I go about 8K or so, then I rotate and within 2K more or so they start to evaporate... :/

How do you rotate them? The original Potenza's are directional. The RE050's are not but are inside/outside tires.

I know, I know... un mount and mount ont he oposite side ("flip them")... I had to go because my fronts feather so I figured I go ahead and flip the rears as well and make sure they wear evenly. Well, after I flip them over they seem to wear faster.

Anyway, 30K is here on the third set and it rained and the car was all over the place, like driving slicks. So I guess it is time again.

Man that sucks! I hope my 2nd set doesn't go that fast. I'm hoping for at least 20k. I may have to buy in bulk to get a discount.

No one has mentioned rear camber and toe settings. This can also be a factor in rear tire wear for the Z. I've noticed that my track model feels particularly well-planted and wonder if my neg camber settings (-1.5 both sides) are the main factor. I also notice a lot of rear wear, but have modified the suspension to make the car more neutral. Put that together with some track days and aiming for late apexes and you have a recipe for burning off rear tires!

OEM settings, 10K miles for the rear, nomal driving for a sport car, so why did they last so few miles? Looking for hard rubber in the rear, can someone recommand me a tire of this type? Thanks

OEM settings encompass a relatively wide range of camber, caster and toe. That is why it may effect rear tire wear. As for a tire recommendation, the Spring issue of Sport Z magazine featured just such a topic. I'd recommend the Hankook K104 as a possiblity for the Z (depending on tire size).

Got 20K miles out of my rear RE040s. Currently at 27K miles on my GS-D3s, with about 4/32nd tread depth left.

If you're a past Sport Z subscriber, the Spring '05 issue was issued a couple of months ago! For those that haven't subscribed, back issues are available (check the site for details: sportzmagazine.com). The tire article is on pp. 48-49.

Any problems caused by the different offset between the front and rear wheels ? Maybe you have AM wheels.
I'm contemplating rotating frt to rear my stock 17in wheels with the OE tires to get better wear. I'm not sure how that will affect the handling. That would mean having 235 frt and 225 back with the different offset also.
This would be a temporary measure, maybe for when I do a long road trip. I would place them back to normal for the track.
