About this time last year I put 19" Volks along with the very popular Toyo T1S tires. I was relatively happy with the setup initially but always felt the Toyos sidewalls were a little soft in tight/quick maneuvers.

Well last week the right rear tire ran over something that instantly blew it out and the tire proceeded to shread. The tread came away from the sidewalls! Considering that I had plenty of tread left, it is painfull loss. Some very expensive tires out the window.

Although this is an expensive loss, it will give me the excuse to dump the Toyo's all around. Even though there was no sign of featuring the front tires had become very noisy. Growling as I slowed down just like feathering causes, but again no feathering.

I have thrown the stock 17's back on for now and will consider the Goodyear F1 GS-D3 tires. From the write-ups and tests I have found on the net, they seem a good all around street tire.

I will not be buying Toyo's again any time soon. I have read of disappointment with the newer T1R as well so those are not an option in my book either.

Yeah. Fortunately the Volk wheel is ok. The tire stayed together long enough to allow a controlled stop and protected the wheel. Hopefully the GY's will be better. All the reviews I can find are very good.

 

I have heard the Goodyears have kinda a weak sidewall as well. BFG all the way.

BFGs are soooo loud.... T1Rs here and could not be happier. Many improvements over T1S

I can't hear my tires cause my car is too damn loud. If you don't like the sound of a loud tire, don't ever get 3" true dual exhaust. You'll shoot yourself.

 

I had considered BFG KDW 2's until I read about their poor wet traction. Being in South FL I need a tire with decent wet capabilities as well. The GY ranked much better.

If you tires with firm side wall, try Dunlope SP Sport Maxx. This is the first time I used this tire and I like it much better than Toyo.

It has firm side wall. I am pretty impressed with these tires. It out performs Bridgestone S-03 in many area on Tirerack road test and its cheaper than Bridgestone S-03.

Poor wet traction? The DW means dry and wet traction. The BFG KD's do however have bad wet traction. Tirerack's test are not the final answer but they are a good comparo...look at the wet traction.

You might also look at the Bridgestone S-03's. Great tire. I'm not sure what their wet-weather performance is though.

 

i second that notion bout the SO3s

 

Its possible for all tires to experience failure, and depending on your speed, they will “fall apart” as you have seen. Is Toyo more prone to failure than other brands.

 

+1. Get headers. That will take care of any tire noise.

 

I had a similar experience. However mine turned out to be caused by an alignment problem on that wheel. Be sure to check your alignment once you get your new tires on to be sure nothing is way out of whack. It's amazing what a serious Camber problem on one wheel can do.

 

+1 on the kdw's...i had them on my spec v and i loved them....badass tires that look mean as hell.

 

Yes, it sucks when your tires start to feature. ;-)
