Default chemical stripping for powdercoat?

anyone heard of that? I'd rather not sandblast because I want to polish.

I've also heard of heating the wheel alittle bit (like to 200F), then using a finer abrasive.

any ideas?

thx

Chemical stripping is usually the preferred method of prep before powder coating. All previous finish must be removed before refinishing. Abrasive blast cleaning works good, but it abrades the surface, can change dimensions slightly, round off sharp edges and make the wheel look "soft", and blur logos and lettering on wheels. There are companies that will chemical dip and strip your wheels for about $35-40 per wheel. The stuff they use is really nasty and best avoided unless you really suit-up and wear a mask. Unfortunately, its not cheap. Almost as expensive as the powder coating. $40 to take the finish off and $40 to put it back on.

thanks!

Unfortunately, I'm in Little Rock and it was extremely hard to find a PC-er that would do a low temp ecoat (who did a crappy job!), much less anyone could strip them. I was adamat that these thin spoke wheels not see 425F+. They didnt understand. Sad really. Now I'm trying to get them stripped and the 4-5 local places dont understand why I dont just let them blast away. They dont even use any composite media, they just want to dig in with the meanest abrasive they can use.

Can anyone refer me to a place? I can get them to Dallas, Houston, Memphis, Nashville, probably even Atlanta. I'd done some searching on the web, actually alot.. but cant find anyone who does stripping (well, this kind! haha).

You can definately get it done in Atlanta. There is one highly recommended chemical stripping outfit that routinely does wheels. There are also plenty of powder coating suppliers. There are also several "one stop shopping" guys. Send them the wheel, pick out the color and they do everything-complete with a waranty against peeling, etc. Check out Wheel Magic on the web. Or if you want just stripping, I will get you some phone numbers. Let me know.

gave them a call. yeah, sound like very nice, knowledgeable people. but they want $300 to strip them. Ouch. But hey, its an option, at least I know it can be done somewhere. thanks for the info.
