Default question about NEW HANDLING feel with new tires.

hi, i just purchased some toyo tires. i believe they are the toyo pr4's, or something liek that.

i used to have potenzas and the rear tires got all bald so i replaced them with the new toyos yesterday.

today, i took the Z out to the canyons and tested them out.

what i found out was there was a newer feel. the feel is kind of scary, reminds me of driving my old toyota camry.. the tires seem to respond very well, but the car jerks from left to right, felt like it was rolling a little bit when i would turn the wheel from left to right.

also, when i switch lanes on the freeway, the car would seem like it was leaning into the turn a bit more than it did before i got the new tires.

does this have anything to do with the new tires i bought? They are new, so the treads are still new. does that have anything to do with handling?

I have an 05 enthusiast Z with 17" wheels.

any suggests?

Thanks.

If your backs are different brand/tread pattern than fronts it could easily make a difference.

Personally, I think its nutty to run different tires front/back.

oh damn.... then this could be a problem then....

what do you think about the toyo tires? they were $170 each for the rears. my front potenzas are still good. they have about 10k more miles on them...

i just might change the fronts in a few months then.

Toyo tires are known to have softer sidewalls. The stock bridgestones are pretty stiff in comparison. Thats probably what you are referring to. I had my T1-S tires and didn't like them from the beginning and they are even higher performance than the ones you have.

All new tires handle differently. Doesn't necessarily mean that they are poor tires. Drive 1,000 miles and you will get accustomed. Then they will feel more comfortable.

Default Other handling factors

Toyo makes a good tire. Other factors to consider: did you check the tire inflation pressures yourself? The Z is sensitive to front-to-rear pressure differentials. Also, new tires have more tread and that "tread squirm" can also account for some of the side loading issues you're feeling...

Also, if they are directional tread tires check and make sure they were installed the correct direction. There is a little arrow on the sidewalls if they are that type and should point the direction of rotation with the car going forward. If not it could be anything listed already or something else
Seriously though double check that since no one mentioned it yet
Sounds like it could be weaker sidewalls though when I read this again. Get out of the car and try to shake it from side to side and check the sidewalls for flex comparing the toyos to stock ? Good luck

hey guys, is running 2 different tires really a big deal?

i mean, really... i really can't afford to put 2 new front tires right now to match the 2 new back toyo 4's i just purchased. just spent $765 on 2 new tires, rotors and brake pads and installation....

is running 2 different tires really that big a deal? what are the consequences?

both the stock potenzas and contisportcontactIIs have very similar tread pattern and they are extremely compatible on the road.

Tires are over pressure.

this is pretty typical when you get new tires. the tire manufacturer puts a grease like element on the tires for storage purposes (keeps the rubber from going bad). once you drive a few hundred miles, you'll wear that layer of grease like material off and they'll become stickier.

most say not to mix different tires but, for normal street driving you should be fine.
