Default Volk Wheels Not ROUND? What the HELL?

I was in the process of getting my Volk Progressive TEs mounted with tires this weekend, and the tire tech calls me into the bay and proceeds to tell me that at least 2 of the 4 wheels aren't completely round!!!!! He showed me and I watched as the gap between the wheel and the gauge widened about an 1/8th of an inch as he rotated it!!!!!!

They were able to mount and balance them with no problems, but I haven't got them on my Z yet, due to snowy weather. Should I look into replacing them right now, or is there a chance that everything will be ok when I finally get them on my car?

I can't believe this!!!!! I've never read anything like this before!!!! Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Mark

Contact Volk immediately. Don't drive on them! If you drive on them, the seller will have a good case that the problem is YOUR fault.

Bought the wheels new. I'm going to contact the vendor where I purchased them as soon as they open. I guess driving on them would be stupid eh?

yeah i would contact the vendor immediately and see what they will do for you. i def. wouldn't drive on 'em. hopefully they don't blame the problem on the people that mounted your tire.

where did you get the wheel mounted and balance @?? when i got mind done on my 3 sets at a local tires shop I had the same problem. Then I brought it to a shop that does aftermarket wheels and tires and they balanced it and it came out no problem. Make sure to have the tires tech re cal. his balancing machine.

In reading your post, I wonder if the calibration was the problem, because they told me that they mounted and balanced perfect. I got them done at Costco. My friend who owns a Z works there as the manager, so quality of service is not an issue. Not at all.

I've got a call into where I bought them, Intense Motorsports, who got them from Mackin. Said they would let me know what Mackin says. I'm hoping that it's not a problem and that I can mount them up tonight!!!!!!!

Thanks for the post Volk350Z. You've given me some much needed hope!

I just couldn't believe that after reading hundreds of posts about wheels, I had never read anything about this before. And that such an expensive wheel would not be, of all things, round!!!!!! That and everyone's posts have got me thinking that it was the machine, and not the wheels. Oh please lord.....

Ok, latest and greatest. Took my wheels to another tire place and they used a Road Force machine, to check them out, and told me that they were fine. So I'm going with it!!!!! I'll post some pics when I get them installed.

Hey Mark, I can't wait to see your TEs. I got my MEs installed this past Saturday and they look NICE! I couldn't be happier with them. I also have my car lowered with the Espelir Active GT springs. Everything is GREAT! Oh my God I love my new wheels. I want to post pics, but I don't have a freakin' camera. I'm trying to borrow one, but no luck yet. I'm sure you're just as excited as I am.

Wheels cannot be perfectly round. I wonder what the acceptable runout is? 1/100 inch?

As a home shop machinist, I can tell you that when you are turning a one piece object like a wheel there is essentially zero run out. However, on a multi piece wheel, even though the rim parts have zero run out, the assembled wheel will almost certainly have some run out. Ideally you would shoot for something less than .001 inch (one thou).

I emailed Mackin/Volk to see if I could get the Progressive TE's without the tabs and they said I could but I would have to order 100 of em! I might have a look at the ME's now.
