Default Weighed stock tower bar today - 7lbs?! Damn! :)

I weighed the stock tower bar today because I swapped out to the carbon fiber version. The stock unit is ~7lbs, which is heavier than my EVO or my Subaru. Hehe.

Swapped to a 2.9lbs carbon fiber Aerosync one. Links here:

I'm interested, but it looks like there is not much clearance for an aftermarket spacer or plenum. How to make it work with something like this? Add washers on the bolts?

There's about 5mm more clearance than stock, but if you have a really thick spacer, then yeah, you'll have to add some spacers.

Thanks,

Gary

Sorry man, they're working on one for the G35. I have a G35 myself, the way the stock components are setup (the lines) it just won't fit. I'll keep everyone posted.

Thanks,

Gary

Does losing the ability to preload the brace hurt much? The stock brace is preloaded to fight flex. This bar is gorgeous, but dunno if saving 4 pounds is really worth it if things are less stiff at the end of the day.

Any bar that has moveable pivot points will not work as well as one that doesn't.

Yea, that carbon fiber strut bar and those brackets are a work of art, but I think I'll just wear my lightweight underwear to the track and keep that 4 pounds of metal stiffening my suspension

If I was building a show car or drag car, this would definitely be on my list though. That thing is gorgeous, especially for that price!

Have the ability to adjust the stiffness of the bar is definitely nice. Not really very noticeable in terms of performance really (a tower bar really just isn't that noticeable in performance as opposed to no bar) between loading up the bar and the carbon one. I think the bar has 3 advantages:

1. It's lighter
2. It looks cool
3. It gives your manifold spacer a bit more room

All that and it's not very expensive. Obviously you're not going to see a substantial improvement in performance just from a tower bar.

I only brought up the weight issue because I was actually surprised at the weight of the stock 350Z bar. Being only a 2pt bar, it is substantially heavier than most OEM bars on the market!

Cheers,

Gary

Oh, I agree with you 100% on your reasons, as I said above. Certainly not bad-mouthing the product at all. All cars are, at the end of the day, giant piles of compromises. Just trying to learn as much as I can. I think many things on the Z were biased in favor of stiffness over light weight. Certainly you could go the other direction.

And, of course, pointing out the weight difference gives you an opportunity to circumvent the "No vendor advertisements in the tech forums" rule.

The Carbon Fiber Strut Bar is especially noticeable during mid corner dips and when you're going at semi-high speeds taking it through the turns. But being that it is carbon fiber, it is lightweight and you won't be able to feel the difference in load but it will actually stiffen up the front of your car for better cornering .

Cheers,
Mark
