Default TPMS and valve stem caps

So I just got charged 20 buck for new valve stem caps from the dealership because "your car has TPMS and needs special caps or whatever" (caps were stolen recently)

Did I just get BS'ed or is this a valid thing?

I didn't really care, because I got a free oil change from the dealer a year after my "first oil change free deal" and many oil changes before this.

Did they just "honor" the free oil change and get me for the caps or what?

I use the Z logo theft proof caps, and they work just as well. I think you were taken, gagged, robbed, and raped!

yeah, you don't need special caps. The TPMS sits inside the wheel, and is attached to the valvestem. You can use any cap you want.

The TPMS caps are metal whereas your usual valve stem caps a plastic. Like everything else from the dealer - way overpriced.

I looking for some valve caps right now. I want a solid metal cap. The plastic ones strip to easily. I also have the TPMS and most caps you get at any auto part store are too short. They don't screw all the way down on the TPMS valve stem.

They do not need any special caps, they really do not need any at all...

The OEM Caps you can purchase from a dealer will work, but they will be $... that is probably what they sold you and from the standard parts guy think that its all that can work...

Jason, a little off-topic, but can TPMS be put on Volks thru the dealer or thru Discount Tire?

I live in Texas so your place is out of the question. I heard of banding but not sure if someone can do that without messing my Volks up.

As long as it is a single piece volk wheel the TPMS work in the wheels... Most of the Multi Piece wheels do not alow for the TPMS to mount properly... Any tire shop can put them in for you... Alot of dealers including ours do not have tire machines that will mount reverse mount wheels like alot of the volk multi piece wheels so would have to go to a tire specialty shop...

This is how the TPMS sensor mounts in a single piece wheel...

This is how it would mount in a 2 piece wheel and it will be snapped off by the tire when mounting it...

You would have to find a place that would tie strap it to the inside of the wheel but there are possible problems with it...

Best thing to do is not use TPMS at all... it is not a problem...

I did the banding and it's not a problem if you secure it properly. Better than having a light on the dash, and no TPS function..

heh, thanks for the advice. Like I said, looks like they got their money for the oil change afterall. Also, check this out:

http://www.schrader-bridgeport.com/b...cation_id=4816

Not really my deal, but interesting for people getting their tires/rims changed.

Also, if you go HRE's they will custom butt the wheel for the TPS, Not sure how pricey your looking at Volk, but if they could do some custom they could do the same thing.
