Default Tire Size Sanity check.

I'm in the process of assembling a wheel tire combo for Street/track/autoX use. Does the setup below make sense? I've run the numbers and don't see a problem. but another few sets of eys can't hurt.

I'm mostly concerened with the fronts. will this size tire on this offset rim fit in the front wheelwell? also.. My can has TCS but no VDC.

The wheels: 9.5 inches wide front & Rear +22 offset (Gram Lights from A Spec!)

I was thinking of going with:

Front: 265/35ZR18
Rear: 275/35ZR18

I'm Also adding a nismo Power stering cooler

Does anyone see a reason to raise the red flag here?

Thanks

275 Hoosiers fit on my front 8" track rims fine, and I'd go "square" (all tires the same size) to reduce understeer.

VDC/TDC shouldn't be an issue, since you will probably want to turn it off anyway.

Just out of curiosity what class does this put you in? Is this set-up OK for B street prepared?

I don't think it is a BSP safe setup. I'm pretty sure it would place me in SM. I belive the rules allow for a +/- .25 inch diffrence in offset. this would be 0.43 inch (rear) diffrence.

However locally we have a few non-SCCA Autox series run by Car clubs that are more freindly to this type setup.

Go with a 40 profile instead of 35 to keep your speedo close to stock wheel speeds.

Go with a 275/35/18 up front and a 275/40/18 in the rear. That makes more sense.

You'd be faster at autocross with 275s or even 285s all around but 265 is a lot of tire on the front for daily driving so it's a nice compromise. Your tire sizes should be fine for TCS. It'll throw the speedo off a little, but you might enjoy the gearing improvement, stiffer sidewalls and looks of the 35s. 275/40 looks likes a monster sidewall, but JETs recommendation would be my second choice between the two.

Be sure to post pics whatever you decide...those wheels are sick.

you should be fine bro. our wheel wells are huge. i have a small family living in my front wheel well.
VDC shouldnt be an issue either. your overall diameter of your tires are close enough. ideally you want them with in 0.125" but you should be fine.

good luck.

Thanks Guys!!

So to Summerize...

While the tires will fit in the wheel wells and would be fine for a VDC/TCS enabled car the speedo will be off. A better choice may be 275/35/18 up front and a 275/40/18 in the rear.

The pluses to this setup are:
  • Its "Square" in regards to the size of the contact patch and should reduce under steer.
  • This setup won't induce much speedo error.

The Minuses are:
  • 275's in front may be a bit too agressive for Daily driving.
  • This setup (wheels) may not BSP leagal for Autox
  • the originally proposed setup would offer better acceleration than this setup.

I have a set of 9.5 inch gram lights with Hoosiers 275/35/18 that I run on the track, all four wheels, and it is fine. But for DD the Hoosiers are out of the question.
A different set up that also fits for me is the Enkei NT03+M wheels, 9.5" front with a 27mm offset and the Nitto NT-01 tire in 275/35/18, and the 10.5" rear with a 30mm offset and the 315/30/18 tire. That is about as much rubber as you can jam under there without rubbing, although your camber settings and coilovers selection can make the difference between rub and no rub, both inside and outside, so you have to be careful. You can run the Nitto on the street, if you want to, but it will wear quickly on the more abrasive street surfaces. It is great for the track, but I do not autocross this car and am not familiar with the regs. From the posts above it probably is a nonstarter for you for autoX.
You definitely need an upgraded power steering cooler for that much rubber up front.
Have fun.
