Default '03 Rays Track New Tire Setup Question.

okay, so I've done some searching and I still couldn't find the answer 100%. I just got some '03 OEM rays Track wheels, and the tire sizes I am going to put on them are:
REAR: 275/35/18 on 8.5in wide
FRONT: 225/35/18 on 8in wide

I don't have a lot of time to really look into this (with two jobs), and I know there is all the charts and stuff, but could someone who knows what they are talking about tell me if this would work with no VDC or traction problems, and of any complications I would have on going to a lower profile. Thanks.

I just picked some used track wheels myself, and once they're on, your never want to take them off. The weight difference is very noticible, the car is much quicker and responsive. I too need to order new tires because the originals are done. They're RE040 and even though they're done, they still ride great and have plenty of grip. I had yoko es100 on my stockers and hated them.

I've heard bad things from upsizing, that it can damage your abs, trac control and others.

From what I've found out is that upsizing should be matched. So when going wider from 245 to 255, you have to drop the 45 to 40 and so on for the fronts.

This will help.

the OEM fronts are 225/45's.......so why would you go with a 35? Also almost everyone will agree that the most you should up to in the rear is a 265.

Im getting ready to buy a new set for my tracks and Im going 245/40 and 255/40. But i have drop and spacers.

Search harder.....becuase i found a bunch of threads on tires for track wheels.

Thank you all three, I meant to say a 40 profile instead of a 35. I thought the tires were 40's from the factory, my bad. It looks like I'm going to go 265 in the rear and 225 in the front. Thanks.

If your going to up the rears from 245 to 265, why not up the fronts from 225 to 245, so that the dynamics will be equaly wider.

And drop the 45 to 40.

I'm want this setup, but affraid of the ride quality. Because bigger isen't always better.

245/40 front, 275/40 rear FTW.

A friend of mine works in the auto industry and has mounted tires for a living in the past. He's looked at the 275 rears and says that they look right. In fact, he thinks that 255 fronts might even be better than the 245s.

The OEM size is

Track 18":
F-225/45WR18
R-245/45WR18

Works perfect. Guaranteed.

i dont think you could fit a 275/40. maybe a 275/35....if you were brave enough to run a 275 at all.

I've been running 245/40 in the front and 264/40 in th rear with no problem. The VDC would always turn on with my stock tires on long sweeping turns, but now it never turns on.

Except for the mistake (rears should be 265/40/18) this is the correct tire combination for the early track wheels.

Look at any tire application chart from the manufactures and they will tell you that 275/35/18s or 275/40/18s require a 9.0+ width wheel. The factory track wheels are 8.5. Don't listen to bad advice just because somebody was dumb enough to do it or claims it's fine. There's a reason for min/max specs for proper applications. This topic has been beaten down over and over on this forum. It's not a preference issue. It's a safety issue. Once you exceed the width requirements of the wheel, your tire's sidewalls will not have proper support because they will be hanging off the sides of the wheel. Put a 275 on an 8.5" wheel on the rear and drive on the hwy making a quick lane change and you'll know.

225/35 will have a ridiculous sidewall height. I would go with 245/35 or 40 with 265 or 275 35 or 40 in the rear

A 265 is fine, but a 275 is dangerous? They have conservative specs to cover their ***. People auto-x all the time with 275 and even 285 on stock wheels without a problem, pushing the car harder than it ever will be on the street. If you want to follow the specs that's fine, but don't act like the tire is going to fall off the wheel if it's outside the recommended range.

I'd definetely go with a 245/40 front. 265/40 rear would be ideal, but tire choices are limited. If you don't feel comfortable with 275/40, then go with 255/40 rear.
