Question Tire Width Questions

I know I should be searching 1st, and i did, but could not find the answer.

So here is the question:

Right now i have 18x8.5 front & 18x9.5 rear.
245/45/18 fronts & 275/40/18 rear

I would like to go wider on the rear
How wide can I go?
295/35/18?

Thanx guys.

You could do that. I'd do 255/40f 275/40r personally but you can fit 295/35 on a 9.5" wheel but you will have to get a shorter front tire (ie 245/40) to avoid confusing vdc/tcs

I do not recommend a 295 mm tire on a 9.5 inch wheel. What is interesting about this forum is that you will get any answer that you want.

Why do you say this David? I run very hard on a 255/40/17 on a 7.5" wide rim. I would guess that I could even fit a 275 on there.
I do agree with the part about being able to get any answer you're looking for.

To the OP: If you go wider in the back, go wider in the front as well. Use a tire calculator and make sure that you are increasing both of the contact patches. The more imbalance to the rear you have, the more understeer you'll get.

wow, my 235/50/17 on a 17x7 already looks bulging, I'd hate to see a 275 on a 7.5

We have ran up to a 285/30/18 on a 18x8.5" wheel up front and a 315/30/18 on a 18x9.5" wheel on the rear. I use this tire combination all the time for years, no problems at all. This is assumeing that your ride hight and wheel offsets are in check. I wouldn't recomend anything over these sizes, but you can go "up to" these sizes on your wheels with no problems.

Just a question for you. Why are you not running a staggered height setup? You're OD is the same front and rear.

I am pretty sure it would "work", but it is not ideal IMO. Might be just OK on a non lowered car though, I guess.

I'd do 275/35 front, 295/35 rear for max width. I saw that combo on a set of 8.5/9.5 Rotas this weekend and it looked pretty good although there was a little sidewall bulge. 245 front, 305 rear = severe understeer.

Look at the tire application guild from the manufacture. Most tables will tell you that 285s are the most you should run on a 9.5" wheel.

Nobody posting to this thread seems to give a darn as to what you should or should not run on these wheels according to manufacturers recommendations, or cares about the stagger
