Default General Tires, what's your opinion?

Looking around for tires and found General Tires UHP on tirerack. They got really good ratings and are low in cost. Have any of you tried these tires and what do you think? Also just got new wheels 18x9.5 20 offset for the rear. Is the offset too much for 275/40/18?

Very good tire for the money - there is better out there of course, but there are also worse for more money too.

Great Bargain Tire!!!!

My 235/35/19 & 265/30/19 General UHP handled as well as stock tires did in most street driving. Only at aggressive driving did I notice a lack of response from the tires which led to slower entry speed .... BUT they continued to grip at higher speeds while accelerating through the turn.

Decent bargin tire. Junk if you are serious about your tires and demand serious performance.

There you have it. Toyo Proxes 4 and Fuzion ZRi are much better options in the same low-budget category.

they are inexpensive, good looking, quiet/smooth riding and easy to balance. For extreme performance on the track...not recommended.

Good looking...well that's subjective, as for easy to balance? I don't know about that either. Most general tires that I have experience with along with cooper generics generally requires more weight to balance than some of the higher quality tires.

I'm not saying they are all like that but if you look at it from a percentage point of view out of say 100 tires of each kind, general tires, both sports and truck tires, are not as well constructed as say michelin, bridgestones, yokohamas...etc.

but for about 1/3 of the price with acceptable street performance, they are bargains IMO.

those generals UHP will be fine from tirerack.
just stay away from those Sumitomos, they are absolutely garbage besides those off brand worthless chinese rubbers.

Generals are made by Continetnal - they are not a chinese tire but really a good tire from a good manufacturer. I have seen Michelins and Bridgestones get so bad after some miles that they cannot be safely balanced at all. Every tire can have issues and not all are perfect, that said - the Generals are a very good tire especially for the money. Especially if you are wanting a good street tire that can last a while you are really getting a longer lasting high performance tire for less money, but of course do sacrifice absolute performance in the process.

i've had contisportcontacIIs before and they required almost close to no weights for spin balancing on stock rims. i was absolutely sold on those.

All I can give you is the experience I have had on my GMC. Generals came stock, and they were really terrible. I had one blowout, and one unexplained flat, and and the handling stunk. I finally threw them away with less than 11K miles on them and replaced them with Goodyears. A BIG improvement. The General people never even responded to my EMail.

As for my Coupe, I run Dunlop SP Sport Max and luv ' em. My General experience has left me with a very sour taste, and as far as I'm concerned they can go to heck.

I used to have general tires on my old rims. They were not quite bad and not good either. The grip was not good as well. Also, it doesn't have rim protection unlike other more expensive tires.
