Default Lug Nutz fell off on Highway

Well, I went the cheap route and got Tuner Lug Nuts, I was driving and suddenly I hear a noise I pull over. I notice I'm missing 3 of 5 on the passenger rear, and all five are loose on the driver side rear. Man am I glad I caught that noise before I hit warp speed.

So Tuner Lug Nuts from Auto Zone = Fail! When I took them off they were all rusty (Bought them chrome) with tons of debris coming out from the inside.

So with that said, I am in need of new lugs, but am skeptical on what to buy. Reason is I have bought more then just one set of Lugs, and its either the key doesn't fit in the whole or the Tool doesn't. I bought a set of locks from a member here OEM Nissan, and that didn't work.

So anyone interested in a set of OEM Nissan Locks, let me know 30 bucks shipped were in the US.

sorry this happened, but this is a prime example of the phrase "you get what you pay for". check out the rays lugs. a bit pricey but i have had mine on for close to 4 years and no problems at all. those do need an adapter for them to be used with the OEM lug wrench but i think the lug set comes with that as well. BTW, what wheels do you got?

I don't see how the lugs would have been the problem. Sounds to me like it wasn't TORQUED down properly.

That's what I thought, but i have tightened them more then once. I am kind of a brut and tend to snap the studs if I apply to much pressure. I think they get loose with vibration. I did have some fun with the car the day before.

When I took them off, they were all rusty inside looking like ****, with a ton of debri in them.

I have had open ends from Discount tire and they rusted on the inside as well, but the lugs never came loose. You need a TORQUE wrench and Torque then down to 85-90lb of tq.

Close Ended Lugz - They are spline drive nut's

Next time I go to a tire shop to have them torque it down the rite way. I tend to brake the Studs. Still want to get new ones not trusting these autozone specials.

Doesnt sound like the lug nuts fault. Buy a torque wrench.

Does not pass sniff test. Faulty lug nuts or operator error?

Possibly a user error, but I can ensure I tighten them. It just seems they rusted out inside, they just dont hold up.

if you are *sure* you had them at spec torque, which honestly, 90 isnt *that* much, you need to inspect your rotors and studs. Make sure you didnt put 1.50 pitch lugs on there, classic and costly mistake. they will seemingly tighten, and will fly off later spectacularly.

Then, make sure that something is not obstructing your rotor from sitting perfectly on your hub (requires removing caliper). Make sure all your mating surfaces are completely clean (no paint chips or thick rust).

Assuming you did get them tight (not all that hard to do) and they were the right thread pitch, I think your problem was caused by something else.

As far as the rust goes always rub a little bit of anti-seeze on your lug studs before installing lug nuts. Then torque to 85ft lbs and then recheck everything after about 200 miles. Good luck!!

Yeah, that was the first thing I thought of when I read the original post.

No sounds like the incorrect thread pattern to me..Ever see that vid of the RX7 at an autocross, he bought the wrong lugs and all 4 wheels fell off..

That right there makes me think that they were the wrong pitch. As with the RX-7 failure, you can get the 1.5 pitch to go on our 1.25 studs and they will tighten but because the threads aren't fully engaged, there's space for the broken/stripped thread material to collect, hence the buildup of debris. Lack of proper engagement means that the threads can and will eventually fail and the nut will pop off.
