Default Need new rear tire opinions

Ran over a screw and it went into my sidewall, so it's unrepairable. So now I get to replace both rears. I've searched and not found any relatively new threads pertaining to this, so if I missed it please point me in the right direction.

my 350 is my DD, but I drive my explorer in the winter, so I don't necessarily need all season tires. But I do however try and drive it in the winter as long as there's no snow or anything. But I do not race, track, etc. I don't need anything crazy and would not like to blow a **** load of money on 2 tires, especially since it's Christmas time.

So any suggestions are welcome, along with sites to check. I've looked a little on tirerack and a place called onlinetires. Onlinetires seems to be the cheapest i've seen so far.

thanks!

Ok I'll check that out now. I think my current are the RE40's. Those are summer tires correct? So I need to get another pair of summer tires...right?

Why would I do that when everyone hates the RE40's and it's been said it's ok to mix tires? I'd rather not waste my money on a shitty tire.

From what I've seen I've got a list of ones I'm interested in..

NITTO INVO
KUMHO ECSTA ASX
HANKOOK VENTUS V12 EVO K110
GENERAL EXCLAIM UHP
SUMITOMO HTRZ-III

opinions?

The Invo's seem to have a pretty good rating across the board (https://my350z.com/forum/wheels-and-...uld-i-get.html)

my opinion is you go to tire rack, read the reviews on each of those brand tires, then make your own decision on what to buy. that is a simple concept called shopping.

If you want to get Summer tires and not want to spend a lot, I'd look at Sumitomo HTR Z III.

However, if you like to drive your car in the winter when the roads are clear, I'd get a set of A/S high performance tires. Summer tires don't perform well when it is cold, even if the roads are dry. So if you like to drive your car on the cold, crisp, clear days, get all seasons.

I just put YOKOHAMA AVID W4S tires on my set of winter wheels and have been really happy with them so far. I also have a set of KUMHO ECSTA ASX XL that I put on my Mazda3 last year and I have been pleased with them as well.

The full set of YOKOHAMA AVID W4S ran me $633 shipped from Tirerack a couple months ago. I think the tires for your rear are about $152 now.

How much tread is left on the tires? It amazes me that people always buy 2 new tires when they puncture only one. There are dozens of used tires out there. I pick these up to sell for this exact reason (though I only have 225/45/18 RE040s at the moment, not the 245 rear).

Very good point, I'm not a tire guy but the guy who was working on my tire ran some little pen thingy to check my tread and he said it was just getting in the red anyways. So i thought it'd be smart to replace them both now. Would having uneven tread affect my driving, etc? That and since they're RE40's and how much everyone hates them I figured it'd be a good time to replace them.

thanks for the info though guys

also, are the RE40's all season or summer tires? I'm guessing summer b/c like I said i try to drive in the winter when the roads are clear and I can definately notice a difference in the feel. That being said, I'd have to buy another pair of all summer tires to keep them matching correct?

Ok after taking scotts advice I've found this deal on ebay..

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...d=350281365271

My question is, how much tread is left when he says "3-4/32"? Does it matter if my rear tires have different amounts of tread left?

That would be the depth of the remaining tread in inches.

Quote:

"At 4/32" I would already suggest considering replacement, especially if you live in a region that sees real winter.

www.tirerack.com recently did a comparison test between a brand new tire and the identical tire worn to 4/32" remaining tread depth. They found that stopping distance on a wet road nearly doubled. A significant amount of traction is lost by the time you get down to that little remaining tread."

Ok so that wouldn't be smart to do for me. It looks like after all of the reviews i've seen, I'm leaning towards the Nitto INVO's. Good price, quiet ride and decent tread life. I appreciate everyone's advice so far to help btw.

That tire is low. Drivable, but low. Have the tire shop use the tire depth tool again, and have them write down the number of 32nds (4/32", 5/32", 3/32", etc.) that remain in each of the tread grooves. If you have 5-6/32" remaining, you could buy a used tire. The wear bar is at 2/32" for most tires, so the one on that ad is double the wear bar depth max. You likely have a lot more tread remaining in the front. It's ok to mix brands or models of tires FR/RR while you merge to a new kind.

Those were Summer high performance tires. There would be no problem putting A/S tires on the rear and leave the summer tires on the front. From the sounds of it, your other rear tire is probably ready to replace.

If I were you, I'd put a pair of A/S on the rear and replace the fronts when the tread starts to get down on those.

You sure about that? i thought i read that it's not smart to mix A/S with summer tires

You don't want to mix and match between fronts, or between rears. ie you always want to keep the same tire on both rears or the same tire on both fronts. For Summer or A/S it won't make a difference if you have Summer in front and A/S in the rear. Just keep in mind that your Summer tires are going to have very little grip when the temps get much south of 40 degrees.

You are likely to find much greater differences between performance categories than you are between summer and A/S tires.

I had to replace my rears due to a similar situation and bought some Yokohama S Drives which I'm very please with. Great tire for the price and I plan on sticking with them for my next set.

So am i going to be looking for 245/45/18's like I have now?

It looks like I might be leaning towards the Sumitomo HTR Z III now. The only good price I could find on the Invo's was at onlinetire or whatever and I've read a lot of bad reviews from them so I'm gonna stay away. Tirerack doesn't even sell Nitto either.

Does anyone have any experience with Vredestein Sessanta?
