For snow go thin and tall. Subtract 20 mm. Go with 50 or 55 series.

Hi Dr., You are located in Europe, so you might be able to use winter performance tires. If that’s the case, the stock sizes (225/46-18” F and 245/45-18” R) might be appropriate.

I’m in Minnesota, USA; and we will get to -14 Degrees Fahrenheit tonight, and we just had significant snowfall. So you see I must use studless snow tires if I even hope to have any grip on the ice forming at that temperature, not to mention the new snow.

I run a dedicated set of wheels/tires that is 225/55-17” all-square (to allow rotating the snow tires to extend the tires’ life). It’s really ugly, but that’s my only good choice.

If you are in a climate where you can use winter performance tires on 18” wheels, this would be my choice. You get better appearance and handling. Dunlop makes some very good winter performance tires.

EDIT: And... Nooo... Don't even think about 16" wheels since 17" wheels will work great and much better than 16" wheels (if you decide not to use your 18" wheels).

Best one we have is the B-Stone Blizzak LM-60. Great sport winter tire for moderate snow use and clear days where you need to retain some handling. Many guys with G37's using them with good results.

I just had the opportunity to drive this tire (on someone else's car), and it is just a great winter performance tire...

...handles exceptionally well for a winter tire (or any type of tire for that matter), provides great grip on ice, and is excellent in reasonable snow depths (reasonable meaning your car does not become high-centered in depths exceeding the axle-height).

I'm using Dunlop M3s and they're fantastic too. Phenomenal grip on the cold asphalt, but the sidewall is soft so handling is affected. On the other hand, they are a very quiet and comfortable tire to ride on.
