80 seems pretty "low"
might leave deep marks...
I was thinking 200-600 area. grab a variety from 200-2000 (coarse to fine, and 2000 is really fine) experiment on some scrap metal or something of similar material and see how it works out. good luck

on my steelies, I just wire wheeled them, light sanded it, wiped it all down, adhesive promoter, and then just took my time to spray them. yes gold rattle can. but its a 14x6 steelie and im not driving a Z on 18" wheels

and remember, 90% prep, 10% paint.

If you don't want the powder coat to fall off, you have to media blast the entire wheel. Your powdercoater should know this...if he doesn't find another guy. Powdercoating is a very detailed process, if the prep ins't right, it won't hold up. If you don't know what media blasting is...it's basically sandblasting but not with sand, its done with small glass beads. Sandblasting is too harsh on alloy or aluminum and will create a surface that powdercoating will not adhere to. Hope this helps you out!

80 is too rough.. I would say 120 then 320 to smooth them out and get 1000 & 2000 to finish them off.

start @ 500, 800 then to 1000 and end it with 1200... u won't do much with 2000, so you better skip it.
