Default Light weight wheel opinions

I have the GT Rays wheels for my Z and was wondering if the difference between the weight of those vs. some lighter weight track wheels is even worth the price/purchase? Should I get lighter wheels or are the GT Rays light enough to not really make much of a difference? Thanks

Yes. Some wheels weigh more. Some weigh less.

Do you have the 18”/19” combo that came with the 2006 and 2007 Track and Grand Touring trim packages? If so, the weight is 21 lbs+/29 lbs+.

That’s fairly light, so I doubt you would gain much swapping out these wheels. I suppose you could swap the rears for 18’s and save 8 lbs. per rear wheel.

I don't know what the grand touring wheels actually weight, but i believe they are actually pretty heavy from reading (don't quote me )

Now for the street, not worth it IMO, but for the track its worth it just for tire sizing. Enkei RPF1's or any other lightweight wheel that can give you a nice 18 front and rear will give you a much better/cheaper tire selection. Wheel weight will be close to the same , some slightly lighter, some slightly heavier, but the tire selection will be so much better.

I agree with terrasmak. If your objective is getting lighter weight wheels for the track, 17” or 18” wheels are a better choice. You have a broader range of tire selection and less co$t.

If you only run on the street (or want separate wheel/tire setups for the street and the track), you won’t do much better than the Rays you have now for street running. The 18”/19” wheel combo looks sharp, and the wheels are fairly light.

21 lbs 4 oz is light for a 18x9.0” wheel (the front wheel).
29 lbs 8 oz is heavier, but the rear wheel is large (19x10.0”)

Thanks Spike, that exactly what I wanted to know. I figured that 30 lbs for a 19x 10 is about the lightest I could do for that size.

19x10.5 Volks are low 20's. 21-22lbs and they are wider. Heck, even the Varrstoens in 19x10.5 are 27.5lbs.

Yes you can do a lot lighter in the rear, enkie RPF1 in 19x10 is 21.3 pounds and half the price of the Volk mentioned above. Plenty of options

No one mentions this, but super lightweight wheels are not the all the same when comparing strength. I ran a lightweight set that was aluminum alloy, but I think they were more like aluminum tinfoil.

We are often surprised at cost differences among various wheels, but part of this is the wheel’s strength.

track model rays are pretty light... not sure on the exact #s off hand but Im pretty sure only the TE37 is lighter than it by about 2oz... but for the cost... if your not tracking it then not that important... if cost is not an issue then get some mag enki's... 12lbs!!!! but about $6K a piece

One option to consider is pick up a pair of used v.1 Track wheels. You have the v.2, 18x9/19x10. The v.1 are 18x8/18x8.5.

The v.1 Track wheels are fair bit lighter.
v.2 are 21.25 front, 29.50 rear
v.1 are 18.2 front, 18.6 rear

So, if you swapped to set of v.1 wheels, you would safe a total of about 27 lbs total wheel weight. Not an insignificant difference and if you look around you can find a set of v.1 wheels for a bit under $1k.

Yeah, the debate is currently between keeping the Rays GT or getting Enkei RPF1's

A lot of good points in this thread. Do you want a good looking wheel thats the same size and lighter or do you want a good looking wheel thats smaller and lighter? My CE28N TAs are wider than the tracks yet weigh almost 10 lbs less, thats a HUGE difference, plus they look amazing, then again they do cost an arm and a leg. I personally love the look of the stock 18/19 track combo. If you do plan to actually track the car, going with a smaller wheel has a ton of benefits. The tires will be much cheaper and the wheel itself is going to be lighter, thats if you purchase a good quality wheel. What is the reason that you want different wheels?

Thank you, this is what I wanted to know. I love the 18/19 setup but if 18/18 has a better advantage, that is what I wanted to know.

If you want to run 18s all around, you'll save alot of weight.

I had these on my skyline before and they are one of the lightest affordable wheels.

Buddy Club P1 Racing QF
18x10 and they weight alittle bit over 16Ib each.
