Default Meaning of "Offset for Rims"

I'm thinking of upgrading to some 19's and I don't really understand what the offset means.

What does a higher number mean and a lower number mean.
19x8.0 /w 45off vs 19x8.0 /w 15off

I already tried using the search but there's over 100 post of unless thread.

Thanks in advance for sharing your knowledge with me.

Lower number means closer to your fender. Higher number means more sunk in. You did not search at all.

The offset of a wheel is the distance from the mounting surface of the wheel to the true center-line of the rim. A positive offset means the mounting surface of the wheel is positioned in front of the true center-line of the rim (this in effect brings the tire in to the fender well more). A negative offset means the mounting surface of the wheel is behind the true center-line of the rim (this will cause the tire to stick out away from the vehicle).

another way to putting this is that the lower the offsets, the bigger the lips and more it sticks out...the higher the offsets, less lippage, more sunk it is in the fender..

This isn't always true, see verdict.'s post for correct definition of wheel offset. Some cast wheels are designed around a specific wheel mold so regardless of the wheels offset; the lip, spoke profile, etc.. will remain the same. Manufactures will use "hub adapters" to vary wheel specs however the wheels will look nearly identical with the exception of the center pcd.

Here's an example on the Rota Grid. The gold wheel is a 18x9.5 +38 fitment and the green wheel is a 18x9.5 +20 fitment. The wheel has the same lip size, same concave, etc.. however the center pcd is recessed further in to allow for a lower offset.

Example on the Enkei RPF1. Top is 18x9.5 +45 and the bottom is 18x9.5 +15
