Purchasing new XXR 522 Rims. Is it possible to go 17X8 in the front and 18X8.5 in the rear. Or would it be better to go the same size the whole way around?
I don't think 17's on front and 18's on the back would create any problems. The question is -------------why would you want to do that? If you really want different sizes, I think 18's on front with 19's on back would look a lot nicer. But hey, it's your car so do what you want.

That setup (275/40-17” Front with 275/40-18” Rear) works great. Tire-sidewall height is near the same front to rear (improved esthetics), ride comfort is very good for a Z, and handling is wonderful for the track and street.
If an owner prefers staggering width (front and rear), a good choice is 245/45/17 Front with 275/40-18” Rear.
I have the XXR's in 19x10 rear and 19x8.5 front - you definitely want to go a size higher because wheels like these that have a lip will look smaller once tires are mounted. So I agree with everyone on here who has stated 18 front and 19 rear. Having a 17" XXR 522 will look like a 16" rim, guaranteed. Trust me on this. Even the 19"s look a little smaller than I'd like them too. Otherwise, great rims - no problems with bending and the weight is almost the same as factory specs. Lastly, make sure you get the lower offsets (ex: +15 rear + 20 front). If you have any questions let me know
Btw, for the mentioned tire size, it should be 275/40/17F & 275/35/18, not 275/40 all around.
If you knew anything about the 350Z you would know that the cars computer requires a taller rear tire for VDC/TCS/ABS to work properly. 275/40-17 front and 275/40-18 would be proper sizing and actually the same height as the stock tires.

hence i tracked the car with those specs and I've seen a lot of 350z's in japan using the same specs at the track. No ICE mode. Also, isn't an 8" wheel too small for a 275 tire? -_-
Please tell me what problems you had if you ever run those tire specs.

If it were a dedicated track setup for the OP i may recomend a non stagger in height, personally i have ran both and the car seems to handle much better with the stagger in ride height. Second , since it is not a track only setup, running a non stagger in height can and will cause VDC/TCS issues. VDC/TCS is nice to have to daily driving.
8 inch wheel for a 275, i would only recomend for an autocross only setup. if you read mention to run nothing less than a 9 inch wheel. Depending on the tire construction i usually won't run an 275 on anyhting less than a 9.5 do to sidewall flex while cornering.
