Default Tire aging

Hello folks,

I have 2009 tires on my car right now and I am changing to new ones due to a different wheel set up.

I have a few old tires from my earlier car and been sitting in garage..when checked the DOT number it turns out to be 1707...that's 17th week of 2007.Almost 5 years old...could I use these tires or are these ticking time bombs...they are good pirelli's too sad to let them go

Mike

fixed

There only a little over 4 years old, but approaching the 6 year mark, at which time they should be discarded. At least they werent baking in the sun the whole time. Id take em to your tire guy and check for cracks.

I had a very similar conundrum recently

https://my350z.com/forum/nismo-350z/...right-now.html

Follow up to the story.......I have used these 6 yr old tires for my last couple of track events and they have held up well!!!!!
I guess if I were you, I would go ahead and use your older tires.

I run 6 year old ps2s on the rear...they look awesome, but they suck for traction. I think it just depends on how they've been used/stored.

There is no recommended age for tires.

Organizations such as Consumer Reports have recommended that the DOT force tire manufactures to put an expiration date on tires. Not certain how worthwhile this is. The primary killer of rubber is ultra violet radiation (sun). Tires kept unexposed to the sun will last longer than those exposed.

This is good information for members buying new tires. If you see that the tires have been sitting in a warehouse for 2 years you may want to say "no thank you."

The tires on the front of my truck are 12 years old now, my car , i wear them out to fast. If you are daily driving, they will last a bit longer, but do have reduced traction.

I send those back. Tire Rack will actually check the production dates before you order them if you ask them to. I have received 4 year old tires before, and had them pay to send them back. That's hardly new.

I'd probably use them. All in all from my experience,it depends on tire brand, how they were stored. The newer tires(last ten years)sure have less visable cracking etc. than
older production tires. There are alot of variables:miles you drive per year, speed etc.
There was a investigative report awhile back on dealers selling old tires...they were sitting in a warehouse for years before they were sold.I thought the story was overblown.Still in all,if I was buying new,I would check the date of manufacture.
