Don't remember exactly mine had 3 layers of paint and 3 layers of clear coat along with primer, so I used a very aggressive grit and then started getting less and less aggressive until it was perfectly smooth.
use 1200 or if you feel thats too much use 1500... that should get it smooth, you dont need to get all the paint off, especially if you are painting over it the same color. Just like Steve said, get it smooth and you will be fine

go to lowes or home depot buy chemical paint remover. Buy some latex gloves and special 1.5in circular wire drill bit .
Attach drill to any cordless / corded power drill and spray the rim with the remover. I did ea rim in 15 min ea. Took it to the bare alloy. Sand with 320 grit, Primer then wed sand with 800 or 1000. Tack cloth it. Ready for rattle can.
My 14.4 volt hitachi drill made short work of the oem finish. I even use really harsh rim cleaner on the rattle can finish and no chips or paint damage. Epic right?
The paint remover may come in a aerosol or buy a plastic spray bottle.
