Default Re-Painting Wheel Question

Hey guys,

so my time attack rims' lips got semi-stripped off by the tow truck company and i'd like to repaint them. Is it ok to overlap the current red paint if I decide to paint all 4 rims' lips? What i'm more concerned with is if the new paint will bond to the existing paint on the rims... i don't want it coming off a few months later...

Thanks

If they are repainted by a professional they will be cleaned and stripped bare of any paint then painted again. If it's done correctly you should not have any problems.

If it's something you can touchup yourself with black paint it won't be as durable a finish but it shouldn't really flake off.

You dont have to go down to bare metal, but you do have to sand the existing paint with say 800 grit so the new paint has something to cling to.

Also depends on how **** you are about the prep. A good paint job is all about the prep work.

Google is your best friend, but basically:

degrease
sand
clean
prime
sand
clean
prime
sand
clean
seal
clean
paint "dry" coat
paint "wet" coat
paint "cover" coat
sand
clean
clearcoat

You are not talking repainting the whole wheel, right?
You want to refinish the red stripe on the rims, correct?
Depending how large the damage is to this pin stripe size
trim, seems you could touch up with a steady hand and a
small brush...AND,the right shade of red.If the red stripes are toast,
you could find someone that does pinstriping.Get e'm all refinished.
Depending how particular you are, there are vinyl stripe wheel kits available for wheels.
Pretty inexpensive.A easy DIY project.

Thanks guys, and yes this is for the red stripes.

JCITY: Do you have more info on the pin stripes? I remember hearing from this forum a long time ago that someone bought them from Pep Boys or something...

After contemplating on whether to repaint or go with vinyl, i think i'll go with the latter just because of the easier application and not having to deal with paint matching (if i just touch up and not repaint the stripes).

The only thing i'm concerned with the vinyl stripes is if it will look "OEM" on my wheels because one of my wheels has a curb rash... I mean i don't want the vinyl to indent into the curb rash, which will make the stripe not look flat

Pep Boys &the other chain auto stores handle pine stripes. However, don't believe they have kits made exclusively for wheels.May be wrong.
Do a search(see title). Many vendors offer these. There are 2 different formatsne that has 4 parts that connect together.each part is already rounded to match the wheel. The other is continous vinyl tape that you
carefully apply to the rim.Stickercity.com offers the tape kits. These kits come in various colors. Some have graphics.I'm assuming you want to match the OEM color and width on the stripe you now have? This might be difficult to get an exact match.
As far as the wheel rash goes, yeah you are gonna have to level the
surface.Seems you could do this with some filler.Apply and sand down.
Its gonna be covered by the new stripes anyway. After sanding the filler,I'd
clean the surface and apply some black with a small brush to match your wheels.
Sounds like a easy DIY project!

+1

I've seen the four connecting vinyl strips before and it works pretty well actually.
