Tires for commuting in the Z?
The RE040s ( edit re050a on the front) from the first owner are starting to wear and I have no idea of knowing how many miles it's been so I'm getting new tires. However I wanted to sacrifice some performance here, since I commute 40 to 50 miles a day, during the week. I figured I would buy some tires that are quieter, have better ride comfort and handle better in the rain and put those on my stock 18s. That way, when I have enough money, I can buy wider rims and racing tires, so I'm not looking to get one tire that does everything.
Which tires would you recommend in 225-45-18/245-45-18 to try and reduce the Z's natural harshness? Thanks.

I'm using a set of Hankook, I think they're called V12's, that I've had for a few months now. Much better 'all around' performance compared to the stock Potenza's. Not sure on price for them, as I got them for $360 brand new for 4 of them through a friend at the dealer, but I'm sure they're cheaper than the Potenza's. They've been quiet on interstate trips, great traction in an all-around driving situation, and were an amazing price!
I appreciate your knowledge on the Ventus V12s based on your own experiences, but they're classified as max performance summer, or racing tires, which is the opposite of what I'm looking for. From my understanding, softer tires in general will heat up faster and wear more quickly, so I don't see a great deal of sense to commute with them. Am I wrong here?
I've got to add the Hankkok V-12 is the best IMO.However, you have some valid points
of the tire you need for your driving needs. You may want to check out the Hankook
V-4.This a "all season" tire that still offers performance. From my experience,a all season
unless you go to a "touring" category tire, may be a little noisier than a tire like the V-12.
It would be better for your area snow etc.Expect to pay substantially more than the great deal mentioned in another post.Buying a set of a tires like V-12's for 360 bucks is unbelievable...a "steal"....I'd think a set of 18's are gonna cost well over $800.

I'd hoped to find tires in a store, on short notice, but if I have to wait, I was thinking of ordering the Hankook Ecsta 4x. I'm still doing my research though.

If you wanted to stay with bridgestone they have a couple more normal options that would work well. The re760 is a nice daily driver performance tire, will last 2-3x longer than an RE040-050. The 970 is a little more money but a nicer ride and even longer lasting.
Some turanza offerings might work depending on your sizes, if you just plan to daily the car.
Just going with what I see daily working at a Firestone auto center lol. Stuff you could walk in and buy.

I am in the same situation...commute about 40 miles a day and only drive spirited on the weekends and even then not too much.(my original RE40 Bridgestones have lasted me 40k so there you go) I researched a ton and am getting the Bridgestone RE970 Pole Positions put on next weekend...the guys at the tire shop told me I couldn't go wrong with them...I'll update this post once I've got em on and have used them for a week or so. They are a bit pricey(about $800 for all 4) but I'm hoping they last me 50k or more so they'll be worth it.

The potenza 970as pole positions are my choice right now but they're a bit expensive. Does anyone know about Goodyear Eagle GTs?
UPDATE - Alright I changed my mind. I'm deciding between the Kumho Ecsta 4x and Hankook Ventus V4 ES now. The Kumhos are supposed to handle better, but the Hankooks are more comfortable, definitely a good daily driver. More over, I'm considering the V4s because they've displayed better traction in the snow, but on Long Island we don't always get snow, and the Ecsta's are better in the rain. Rather than having a really good winter tire in the winter, I'd rather use these through the winter, then switch to a really sticky tire when it warms up again. I can't decide!

Go to tirerack.com and search for high performance all seasons. All season is key, the treadwear rating will be significantly higher than a summer tire.

All right then, all the above participants perform well and expose their ideas awesomely. Hope it is done.
Well I have another question I am looking for the tires which should be specially designed for rain. any recommendation?

I hear the DWS is also good in the rain. Haven't had an opportunity to test this out myself though.
I'm trying to get the tires today. Those DWS seem to be on backorder everywhere. I have a few questions. I'd get the Ventus V4 but I hear they're not good in the rain because of their soft sidewall? If not the Ventus V4s, I'd get General G-MAX AS03 but I read that they're noisy? Lastly, if neither tire, I want the Ecsta 4x but because they're so grippy, does that mean they won't last as long? Tire rack characterizes the Kumhos as a near summer tire rather than all season.
It will be up to you how much you care about tire noise. I think the Z is a noisy car in general due to lack of sound deadening, so I don't give to much thought to tire noise.
FYI the General's scored higher in every single category compared to the Ventus, which is hard to overlook.
Ventus: 420
General: 480
Ecsta: 420
For reference, the treadwear rating for summer tires is typically between 150-300. So any one of your choices should last significantly longer than a summer tire.
