Default Wheel Size to Maximize Performance

What is the best size rims that will not hinder performance for an 04 Z? I have stock 17" rims on it and I want bigger rims. Also, what type should I get? I just got my z less than a month ago so I'm new at this.

There's no simple answer. Normally, the smaller diameters weigh less and hinder performance less than big wheels. But if you're willing to spend the money, you can buy 19" wheels that are just as heavy or lighter than your 17" wheels. Look at Volk forged wheels for example.

Another thing to consider is the price of tires. 17" tires cost a lot less than 19" ones and there are a wider variety to pick from.

17's and 18's for performance, 18's vs 19's for performance vs looks and 20's if you want it to look homie bling bling

I personally wouldn't go higher than a 19", but it would have to be a forged rim.
What are you looking to spend?

!8" wheels are the best compromise for comfort, looks and performance on the 3xxZ.

17's perform the best; 19's look the best; 18's are the best compromise...

Maybe it's because I agree with the others in this thread, but all of those above seem to offer great advice. While the 17's on your car are not that sexy, they are often the choice of a lot of the autocrossers, so they must handle better than they look. Tires are also cheaper than 18's and 19's. If you're going to go with larger rims, get forged ones, they really are a lot lighter. I noticed a much different feel after switching from stock cast 18"s to stock (Rays) forged 18 wheels. The latter seems to spin up faster when accelerating due to a 10-pound difference at each wheel.
