Oil temp 370Z problems
I have noticed that the Oil temp is going up to the mid 200's. What is the normal Oil temperature for these motors and what it should be at.
Does a certain type of oil reduce the Oil temperature ie: AMS oil, Royal Purple etc.
Thanks for the replies.

This doesn't sound good. I'm about a month away from pulling the trigger on a 370z and have been looking forward to it for months now but the more I hear about this the more I worry considering I live in Vegas where I see tripple digits for months in a row.

Redundant thread
There's already a long history of discussion of overheating, oil coolers, etc. ad nauseum on this thread: https://my350z.com/forum/2009-370z/4...d-courses.html

The truth about oil tempature.
HERE IS WHAT YOUR MISSING..........
More important than oil change interval is OIL TEMPERATURE inside the INTERVAL.
The normal interval is 3000 miles.
HERE IS THE MOST IMPORTANT INFO YOU'RE ALL MISSING
Porsche on the 911 and I'm going to bet on all of their models.
the oil temp is managed between 180 and 210 F. and no higher. regardless of what the oil manufacturer says.
a oil breakdown tests have been run many times and when the oil goes over 210 the life of the ( film strength ) drops dramatically and so does the the life of your engine.
The chart I read says 911 engines get over 300,000 + miles on average.
ALL the manufactures know this, example.
Nissan 370 showed up for PR before officially released to the public.
So tests could be run and a article written in favor of the new car model ...of course. good pr is a must.
The 370Z shows up with a
engine oil cooler
transmission cooler
differential cooler
pre installed on the car.
Now. when the car was released to the public, NO OIL COOLER, no diff cooler.
they then took a 370z to the track and the engine oil hit 280 and the ecu put the motor in limp mode and the car did not even do 3 LAPS before shutdown.
Ever hear of A Porsche going into limp mode due to oil temp ?????
I think not.
and this is not just the Nissan motors.
I'm going to bet all automobiles need to follow Porsche's good R&D practices and keep the motor oil between 180 and 210 to keep the FILM STRENGTH at 100 % throughout the oil change interval.
The oil temperature over that time frame ( 3K ) needs keep the oil film strength at maximum at all times through every interval, maximizing film strength and engine over all life.
350 vq motor is done at 100 k, Porsche 911 done at 300 k
That's a huge difference
Now. I have a 2004 350z touring coup. all oem except rotors and pads.
I use Royal Purple 5/w30 and I had to change my oil ever 2000 times.
WHY ?
because right around 2k it started to get that laggy rev and a bit less torque. You can just tell if you drive the car enough when something isn't right.
Well when I found out about Porsche's oil cooling and thought AH HA
I installed a oil cooler with a fan with a temp switch to the oil pan by use of a temp sensor.
When my oil hits 210 f it comes on and stays on until it hits 180 f. and i have to say living in Florida its on almost all of the time.
even idling for 15 mins it comes on, SO that is saying its getting very very hot.
370 z released to the public 230 - 240 idle oil temperature.
I no longer get that laggy feeling until about 7,000 miles tooling around town , track days, oil is changed after tracking is over.
My oil stays clean now and does not turn black Ever.
I think this is a HUGE FIND. Moreover I think its a big industry secrete to generate a lot of revenue off service.
at your expense.
