Need some Z advice.
Hello,
I am thinking about trading my 2009 CBR600RR for a 2004 350z that has 180,000 miles, needs a new clutch. I value my bike at about $4500. Would this be a smart trade for me? Also, with a Z with that many miles what are some common issues to look out for? Thank you

Will the Z be used as a daily driver? What are your intentions for it? Are you riding your bike often?

Yes I would be using the Z as a daily. I use my bike as a daily now. But cool weather is a few weeks away and then I'll be back to driving my junkie cavalier. I don't have any plans for mods. Just a fun daily.

That car has some high miles but really not a deal breaker parts are not cheap but readily available and the cbr is probably not good in the rain or cold or long trips. I would plan for some small issues. And maybe lomg term plan to replace the engine. The tranny has probably already been replaced at some point but maybe it was a good one. As for issues sky is the limit with 180k on the clock but $4500 is pretty cheap even if the car is in need of repairs. all the common problems should have been addressed with the car however its nearing the mileage were everthing is going to start needing attention just be realistic about what your getting into.
What model is the Z and how much have you beaten on your cbr? I would trade my toy for another toy. Im not a big motorcycle guy though. Ive had a few and after a while they get kinda boring just riding around. Its cool going 90 in first gear but you end up screwing yourself on bikes. My thoughts anyways

He didn't mention any specific model so ill a assume the base coupe. I haven't beaten on the cbr at all. This is my 7th ish rocket and I really just enjoy it to squeeze through traffic. I doubt I've had it over 9k rpms since I've owned it. The previous owner might not have been so nice. A new tire and basic cosmetic stuff and it's good to go.
KBB has the Z base coupe with that many miles worth about 3800$ private party. Does that seem fair or a little low balled? Craigslist has them anywhere from $4000 and up. Nothing with really that many miles. I think the deal might ride on how well the interior has held up, and how the car sounds when running. (Like smooth or rough idle.... Etc...)

also depends on the miles on the cbr. Under 15k miles and i say you could sell that bike in a week for 5k.
KBB seems to be low on what the market actually is for z's.
I couldnt be of any help on common issues with z's with that mileage though.
Just know that a clutch with labor is going to run you close $1200 - 15 i would guess.

The only z I have seen that cheap didnt start with unknown engine issues, and was missing body parts and I would have gone to check it out if it wasn't an automatic, I haven't seen any running all together 350z for 4k l cant even find a 300zx around for that price.

I've seen 03-04 high mileage 350Zs going for under 4500 in my area (Silicon Valley), however most if not all of these are Salvage Titles. I'd say, if it's a non-salvage Z, and it's clean (for an 04), then sure, go for it. As with any high mileage vehicle, there are risks involved. I would have the car checked out by a reputable shop/mechanic before finalizing any deal. It's well worth the small fee charged!

Sign up for AAA PLUS membership.. Good for 100 miles car just needs to be registered and the membership doesn't go into effect till aftet 10 days otherwise you will have to pay for mileage after 3. You can wrap the interior and you can get a whole clutch kit from z1 in Georgia for a few hundred bucks I think. Or you could put your bike for sale and use that money for a car that doesnt need anything.

For sure the bushings are shot. My Z has 183k (06) and I'm replacing several of the bushings in it. If the clutch is bad you can't even verify if there are any transmission issues, which there is a strong probability there is.
