Default My HKS exhaust is too loud to drive in CA...HELP!

I just bought a 2004 350z last week with an HKS exhaust that sounds REALLY LOUD. Love the sound but I'm not looking to get pulled over every other day. Plus I get uneasy around cops with this exhaust. It has a 4.5" tail pipe with no silencers. Everything from the exhaust system is intact. Do any of you recommend getting the silencers or should I get a different Catback/muffler? Saw the original HKS silencers on Ebay for $48 each. Is that a good fix or would it still be loud! What do you think?

I heard a G35 with a good exhaust tone so I asked him what he had, he said it was a Tanabe. I'll probably lean towards a Tanabe. I was hopping the silencers would help out for now though.

You sure its an HKS and not a rep? Ive owned both and the rep is outrageously louder. without test pipes the HKS shouldn't be too bad, but the rep is a POS so it might be too loud.

98% chance it is a replica HKS.
But Im pretty sure that the Tanaba exhausts are also rather loud. I could be wrong because Ive never owned one.

Weld a resonated x pipe. My topspeed exhaust has one and it's loud in the upper rpm range but quiet around town.

I had an HKS exhaust and it was actually really quiet IMHO. You probably have an X02 one that has all the packing burned off.

If you want quiet, Tanabe Medalion Touring is the way to go.

Don't drive like an asshat and you can enjoy almost any volume exhaust.

I ended up getting a Tanabe Medalion Exhaust installed yesterday. But now I got another issue probably due to the new exhaust. As soon as I drove it home that day and hit the freeway (normal driving), it felt as if it wanted to stall but didn't and the car starting jerking continuously at about 30mph and couldn't go any faster. Any ideas why? I used to have a true duel exhaust, but the Tanabe had a Y pipe to convert to 1 pipe. Could this be an issue? Do I have to adjust something for this? I'm thinking could be a computer issue or sensor.

Exhaust won't do that. The sensors for the O2 sensors are all before the Ypipe so shouldn't have been touched.

Try unhooking the negative lead from the battery for a couple of hours. That should reset everything. Then see if you're still having that problem. Almost sounds like your car is going into failsafe.

Yea basically what Resmarted said.
Definitely is not related to the catback considering you could completely remove the catback and the car should still run fine...

Thanks Resmarted for the tip. That wasn't the issue. I managed to narrow down the cause. I think it's related to wet roads/rain and some wire/connector which I can't pin point. it jerked once when I drove off the car wash machine but never did it again after that. Jerked a whole lot yesterday, which it did rain. Then, test drove it today on dry roads and runs perfect. My guess is something is getting wet under the car and giving me that issue. Any ideas what connector would cause something like that?

Is there any water in your intake tube? Maybe your maf got wet.

Theres not much under the car that would affect how it's running. Again the O2 sensors are tucked up under and inside there pretty good so I don't think that would be the cause.

If it's a authentic HKS exhaust and you're running OE cats it's not too loud! Are you running ART pipes or HFCs or do you know?

I already got a new Tanabe exhaust. It was a replica HKS with art pipes. Sounds great now!

Good point! It didn't occur to me since I just bought the car, but it does have an AEM Cold Air Intake System which points downward next to the tire. Probably water did get sucked in there. Maybe I should consider a Short Ram Intake to avoid it catching water.
