What Does The Future Hold For Nissan's 350 Z ?
like the idea of the new 350Z "affordable" sports car. But I dont think it's quite fast enough for the way they make it seem ? I understand it's no Viper or Porsche, but the 0-60 is like 5.9 ? I would like to have seen it hit just below 5 like 4.9, and the engine is rated at 280hp ? What if it had just a little bit more, like 325hp, and more torque ?
My question: In a couple of years will it be even faster, but stay close to the low price ? I think this car has a lot of potential, but as it is right now it would not buy one, maybe wait a till the 04/05 model hopefully faster ?
But then for 05 model year, alot of great cars are due out, first off the next gen Corvette code named C6, with base engine at over 400hp, and a Z06-C6 with over 500hp and it has engine parts made by McLaren F1
Then for less ca$h there is the majorly revised 2005 Mustang, with a new frame for the first time since the 70's, it will use the same frame as the Lincoln LS, with the body style looking like a 21st century late 68 fast back Shtang
Time will tell, if it were 2004 which of these 3 cars would buy, and price is a big factor too

uhhh the Z does 0-60 in 5.4-5.5sec.
anyway, corvettes are awesome, but cost as much as 50grand. specificly the Z06 you mentioned. ignoring the fact that corvette doesnt look like a corvette anymore, thats a different story.
as for mustang, we'll see, havent heard what kinda power there is gonna be. and more specificly weight, the LS is rather heavy, and even has a V8 offered, but still it is not fast, or not sports car fast should I say. even if they power it, sounds like it will still be plagued by lack of handling.
therefore based on info I have, I stay with the Z.

I think cars are always going to be created to be better than the previous generation. Better as in engine, interior, and design.
So horse power would improve often, since it would become cheaper to make powerful engines and shared parts from other cars of the same company, etc..
kinda like computer chips
1.1 gig, and then next week they come out with 1.4 gigs
and then the next month it's 2.0 gigs. So improvements are always being done.
so chances are 2004 would often be better then 2003
and 2005 would be better then the 2004
of course this is not always the case, but most of the time yes.

i think its all about the driver, a pro can hit 5.4 in 0-60, but an amatuer like most of us, can hit only 5.9-7.0 for all we know, haha... so, if your a good driver, i think you can beat a viper (if a bad driver is driving a viper)
yes... and sir dingo is out for the count... i don't think he will be replying now
not tryin to make fun.... but this car is great for the money... of course there will be faster but .... damn look at this car

thank you for your replies, i really like 350Z, I saw it at the Chicago auto show in the silver color and loved it to death.
It's just that at 280hp and a 5.5 0-60, could have been improved just alittle more, by say making the engine at 300+hp.
Whats the price of the supercharger coming out ? I hear it adds 50-70hp ? that would push the Z alot faster ?
When I have the money to buy a 3rd car, I have a 2002 Toyota Tundra V8 4x4, my wife drives a 2001.5 VW Passat 1.8turbo, both are black and we love them. But I am dying for a sports car, one that will be garage kept and only driven for fun, not as a daily driver. Most likely all I'll be able to afford is the 350Z, I just want to make sure it is the right choice ? Does this car feel sporty ? I mean when you punch it, do you get whipped back in seat ?
Thanks again

Base car goes 0-60 in 5.4, with $5k in mods you will pe pushing 4.9. That means for about $38 k (Enthusiast Model+Turbo or Supercharge kit+bigger brakes) you will have a super car with a pricetag below $40k. Plus its got killer looks.
$5 k in mods when supercharging or turbocharging? I wouldnt bet on it being that cheap. Superchargers and Turbochargers for these type of cars are extremely expensive.. as is Tuning..
the 2005 Mustang GT with have a Modular 5.0 engine... around 315 horsepower... the Cobra will have a supercharged DOHC version of the 5.0, looking to make 450 horsepower..
The Mustang frame was redesigned in 1994. The 2005 hopefully was handle a bit better. but for now Im doing wel. With minor suspension mods Im getting .97 on the skidpad..
What type of models do they make for the Nissan Z? Ive seen the top of the line ( my buddy has one ) but is the only difference the brakes?? What makes the $8000 difference?

good replies, I support the 350Z all the way, it's just as it is right now, I wouldnt by one for two reasons.
1: i'ts the 1st year of production = I dont beta test cars
2: I bet in a year or two the engine will be pushed above 300hp

They'll do it with variable valves on the exhaust side, and other new valve technology, and since it will breath better they'll need new intake and exhaust manifolds, etc, and other tweaks, too. This car is very fast, but it's strength is not its straight-line speed, it's handling and its ability to blast out of the turns. The engine has fantastic torque that comes on real smooth, which makes the Z incredible around turns, just flick the wheel and you're through, no fuss, completely fluid, just sticks like glue, and I'm sure we can do better than the stock Bstones. The brakes let you go deep into the turns, too, so I'm interested to see how they do against Porsche and Mustang next year, that's their nearest competitors on the track, Z can't keep up with the big V8 in a vette, unless it had FI. Wanted the Track for the Brembos, and the Rays are sweet, but they wouldn't last a week with all the potholes here. But you pay for it in the Z, too, the right is harsh over rough roads. But on a smooth road in the twisties, the Z is soooo sweeeeeeeeeeet....
Once you drive this car, you'll see, it's scary fast around turns, they got the suspension right. We'll see next year, and more power is always better, but the future of the Z on the track looks bright from here.

IMO, a pathetic (read blind grandmother) driver should turn a 13.0 in a new Viper. Stock for stock, I don't see how a Z could beat it. Let's not compare apples to oranges !
Edit: The 2005 Mustang is rumored to be lighter and have a 5.0 engine pushing around 350HP (GT). Many people think these cars don't handle well because the platform is old (read outdated) but Ford engineers have done a good job on the suspension over the years and the GTs reach .89G on the skidpad. I don't know much about the Z handling, any numbers ?
As for the question, I would take the Stang but I might be biased

The reason I browse this board is to get and share information about the 350Z, which happens to be the car I chose to buy, but the more I look around, the more I want to go back to the MR2 MKII forum (MR2 is my tack-weekend car) It is really sickening and a waste of time for most of us to argue about 0-60 and 1/4 mile times, or which car is faster and whether there will be a better bung for the buck next year. I personally, don't care!!!
The 350Z was not meant to be a drag car, but rather a well balance sports.
If you want fast, as in straight line fast, get a domestic muscle car (or whatever is left of the muscle).
On the other hand, if you want a well-balanced sports car, get a more refined and purpose built car, such as the 350Z.
0-60 and 1/4 miles are not a sport (although some people seem to think that), they are just a measure of how the car performs on individual aspects of the overall package; just like slalom, braking, etc.
It is a bit frustrating to hear people saying, "I'm going to the races", when in reality they really mean going to test straight-line acceleration. No wonder, we don't an American F1 driver and the ways things are going, we'll never get one!!!
How many of you actually (or at least plan to) take their cars to a road course and really test what a real sports car is supposed to do.
You all ask for a sports car and then, take it drag racing; what gives, people???
Many cars will beat me in a straight line, but unless they can beat my car on a road course, I would never consider them better cars.

Ain't no way they are developing a corvette engine plus GM will not allow it, Last time someone else made a vette engine, that vette costed $70,000, It was the LT5 in the ZR1 and it was made by Lotus.
The New Vette is rumored to be a 410 hp car
But the New Z06, it will go by a different name mostly, will have
about 440-450 hp not 500hp
Parts were too high quality, I mean expense for Chevy to maintain
The 2004/5 mustang is will not be much of the threat the GT is rumored to make 300 hp like the Mach 1
Now the Cobra if not discontinued will make like 400 hp.
Rumor has it that when the new competition come out, We'll see a Turbo'd 350z. SO don't worry
irst off McLaren F1 is owned by the B to the M to the W
The word is that McLaren will be builing some minor engine parts for the C6 Vette, like gold cylinder heads or something ? They are not making the engine, just some small minor pieces for it

Sorry to throw the argument out of the way for the Corvettes and Mustangs, but I've talked to a salesman here at the local Nissan dealer about what the 350z has coming for the future. Well the saleman first off told me that they'll have the convertible z out in about 1 to 1 1/2 years from now and after that in about another year or so, they'll be introducing a turbo model 350z. I was asking if that was a definate proposal and he surely said so. Is this true about a turbo model z being introduced in the future?
Did you say "the future..."?
I really think that in 2004, they'll up it to 317 or so, just because they can, and it will help sell more cars. Then in '05, they'll need a turbo to compete with low-end Supra et al, or else they won't sell many cars at all. They'll need power, and I don't see them dropping in a V8.
