component speakers
I'm thinking about focal 165k components and am wondering how much should I expect to pay? Also do I need to run new speaker wire and is it difficult and where have you all mounted the crossover
I'm in the process of installing my focal 165k's right now, I've seen them on EBay brand new w/ warranty for $249-$259 plus shipping. From what everyone says at the car audio forum its okay to run with the stock wires, which i'm doing. The wires are a bit thin though. You'll need to pick up a 1"spacer ring for your speakers so that the magnet will clear the window, I bought one at Best buy for $12. I'm mounting the crossover on the door, theres plenty of room between the door and panel. I mounted the tweeter in the stock location, its a bit larger then the stock tweet but will fit.

My installer recommends doing the insides of both the outer and inner panel.

i installed jl audio xr components and they sound awesome. You can find then for $250 online, which is a fabulous bargain.
Dynomat like crazy. The doors are SOOOOo boomy they really let the bass rock. I also used 16 gauge new speaker wire, but the process is sketchy getting through the rubber sleeve. If you want to do the thing professionally, the only solution is to disconnect the electrical harness going from the door to the body and then drill THROUGH the plastic to feed the wires. You really have to be willing to demolish the unused part of the harness.
Ill show pics if you want, but it does run the risk of screwing up your door electronics if you are not handy with a drill. Also, youll need to make a wood spacer 1.25 inches high so the speaker can clear the window (install the speaker with the windows down). In addition youll need to file down one of the plastic nubs holding the speaker grill in to be able to get the door back on.
I put my crossover in the area behind the driver onto an MDF board that holds all my amps and crap
Ill do pics later if you want!!
