humm interesting since they mention the torque to the crank is lower than on the old engine...

Default apples to apples === oranges to oranges

Lets clear up any misconceptions here. The 287 hp engine puts out more torque. 274 ft-lbs at 4800 rpm. The 300 hp engine puts out its maximum torque, 246 ft-lbs @ a higher rpm - 6400 rpm. At that same rpm, the 287 hp engine puts out lower torque (but not by much). Question is, what is the torque difference between motors at 4800 rpm?

Some mags have characterized the 287hp engine as a muscle car motor, it appears nissan has nudged the engine a little in the Porche direction.

The 300hp motor will out run us in the quarter mile but I'm sure it's at the expense of some of that easy to access around town torque between 3k and4k.

I dunno, I have the 300hp engine in my 35th and I've driven a few with the "usual" engine and they seem about the same to me. *shrug*

sounds like there isn't a dimes worth of difference overall in the two...the effect of a reflash on this new engine might be interesting.

My advice to any new Z buyer would be to pick the trim level that suits your needs and buy it. I got the 35th because I wanted leather and all the gadgets and I also wanted the Brembos, etc. I would have bought the car anyway even if it was the 287hp rating. I am not a professional race car driver, so the difference between the 2 would never be realized by me personally. IMHO, you can't really go wrong with either one.

I hear you Camel, I think most of the guys hear are curious if the 300hp engine has more mod potential and what it bodes for the future.

Agreed, I am curious but beyond the Nismo intake that is already installed and maybe a catback, that will be the extent of my modding. I threw well over 10 grand into my WRX and ended up losing over 1/2 of it. Just the nature of modding I guess, but I won't be doing that again.

The new engine does not put out its max torque at 6400 rpms...this occurs at 4800 rpms and it's 260 pounds.
