My first ticket... HELP!!!
Damn, could the day getting any worst for me, on chinese new year? just got my first ticket for my 05 350z... it was crazy cause I had my v1 radar on, and didnt detech any radar gun being used, and when i got pull over by the cop, she said "you know how fast you were going...?" I said prolly 60mph or so... then she said that I was going at 70mph, and when I ask, may I see the radar gun for my speed, and she said that we dont need to use the radar gun to detech how fast you were going... I said "are you serious?" and she said that we could use our speed gauges to see how fast you were going... then she said "sign here"... but my question is could the cops pull me over without using a radar gun and est. the speed i was going at? or should I go to court and fight for this ticket... btw, I was going at 60mph on a 50mph highway zone....
sorry to hear about the ticket, that sucks...i have heard of cops pulling over ppl by using their speed as reference and not using radar guns, so you are not the first.
btw, where did you get pulled over?

I'd go to court and try to fight it, you may be able to get off with a lesser finer anyways.
Here in VA the cops have to be trailing you for at least a mile at the same speed in order to give you a ticket for it, so I've been told.

look up fightmyticket.com or somthing like that. there is so much info out there about fighting tickets you would be amazed. my favorite tatcit is to cancel the court date at the last possible day then resceual then cancel again this makes it hard on the cop. then they might not even show up the the final hearing and if that happens you can have the ticket dismissed. but do you reserch before you do anything.
There are laws about pacing a car to get his speed. Something like they have to follow your for a mile at a constant speed. I would try and look up the laws in your state then decide what to do.

wow thats the most ridiculous thing i've ever heard. I remember a time when i was going to school for night class. We got out at 1:30am as i was heading to my apartment. I saw a cop near the bar he followed me. There was snow on the ground. He like cut me off and kept on. So anyway the next night I saw him again. There were people walking across the street. I sped up at them. Caught this cops attention. He followed me again. after like a mile he decided he would pull me over. I had the radar detector an the whole nine yards. (By the way the cops hate the school i was going too) He does his thing blah blah.
He says did you see those people walking? Yes sir i did and even tried braking for them.
Oh yeah i didn't see any brake lights. Well i don't know it is a new truck i think they work.
Next he says you where speeding. I said no i think your mistaken i watched you the whole time and kept the speedo under and i have a radar detector.
So next he pulls out the wild card. You've been drinking. I say what and pull my coat off to show him my school uniform. I don't think so. He was livid. sheepishly and still being a dumb says have a nice evening and drive more carefully.
just a hassler. I'd fight but hey the courts will most always side with the cops. so what if they don't show you the radar. Do they have a printout of your speed. NO wheres the proof.

I had the exact same thing. I was driving fast in the right lane and sped up to merge to the left to avoid the cars that were getting on the freeway. I didn't see that one of them was a cop so I blew by him really fast and cut 3 lanes of traffic in one motion. I know it was not very smart but what's done is done. Anyways, he pulled me over after he caught up with me and told me that I was speeding. I have a radar detector, which didn't go off, so I asked him how he registered my speed. He said that I was going at least 20 mph faster then everyone else. So I asked him if everyone was going 40 then I was going 60, right? In anycase, he wrote me a ticket that read something like "Speed exceeding safe reasonable speed." A lawyer friend of mine went with me to court and it took her 2min to get it dismissed. If you don't have lawyer friends it should cost you ~$300 for an attorney to represent you and I am more than sure they can get it off for you.
Around here its called pacing. A cop can follow you for a distance and "estimate" your speed based on his. Its all gravy as far as the court system is concerned. I didn't fight mine when I got it b/c I really was speeding and his assessment was fairly accurate.

That way when a cop screws you over and wins you still broke even.
trust me its easyer to get out of a ticket than one might think. just do your home work on the subject and you should start to get an idea of what to do. cops have to prove a lot of stuff to prove that you were speeding. if they prove every thing but one is still a little fuzzy then you can say that there is resonable doubt.
Bummer, I also just got my first ticket Superbowl Sunday by CHP who said I was doing between 85 and 90. He wrote me for 80 which was a good thing but I definitely will go to Court to fight it or at least get the fine reduce and do Traffic School if not. Like the guy said a few posts back, do the research, be prepared and you have a good chance of beating it or at the worst getting the fine reduced.
My favorite is when a cop pulled my brother over (he gets pulled over 2-3 a week they have marked his car in their system according to a friend who's a cop) anyways he takes off his seat belt to get his wallet out for his ID and the cop writes him a ticket for not wearing a seat belt - I love this country
I'm new, but pay an attorney and don't worry about it. All depends on your personal past and finding the best attorney in that county. I've gotten several speeding tickets in NC and never seen anything else about those after sending to the lawyer. You can always go to court yourself and speak to the DA, but the power an attorney has over you is that he has 50-100 other tickets in his hand when he deals with the DA. If the DA isn't working with the attorney, the lawyer merely threatens to take all those tickets to court, and no DA wants to tie up court over 100 traffic tickets. Should be no problem getting it reduced to improper equipment as long as you have a good record. I didn't take time to read all your posts, but if over 15 mph, you probably have another problem and less chance to wiggle.
Anyway, that's my 2 cents.
Cheers and good luck.
