Default Drain Plug Crush Washers for Oil Change

Guys,

Yesterday i did my oil change. Replacing the new washer for the oil drain nut.

Do you place the smaller head of the washer up against the oil pan (facing up) or vice versa.

The washer has two different sizes in diameter.

Do you really have to replace that every time you do an oil change? If so, where do you get them? What exactly is it called if I were to go out and buy one when I grab my oil and filter.

I didn't notice the first time that I changed the oil that the washer was special. I just thought it was a regular flat washer. Once I knew they were special, I bought 5 from the dealer but I've never used them. I figured that, if I didn't need them the first oil change, why would I need them for the second or third. I have 22k miles - and regular changes - and am still using the original washer that came with the car. It hasn't leaked yet; I keep checking. The drain pan is not really at high pressure, so it doesn't take much to seal the plug. If it ever drops one drop on the garage floor, I'll use a new washer the next change.

If you look at the washer one side should be rounded and one side should be flat.. the rounded side goes up against the pan.. very simple.. even if you put it the oppsite way it still should not leak.. AND YES YOU SHOULD CHANGE THAT WASHER EVER TIME YOU DO AN OIL CHANGE.. Its only a few cents.. and another thing, drain plugs DO NOT NEED TO BE SUPERMAN TIGHT. Just with a little pressure. Working on car for almost 8 years now, i see this everyday and it always causes damage to the plug(easily replaced no biggie) and the oil pan..

Your advice is exactly opposite the diagram posted by Daves Z #3 in the 1st reply post, which supposedly came from the service manual.
