Default Zip tie front license plate

I just received my plates...am a bit concerned about air flow restriction...but it look as though it should not be a problem.

When postioning the plate centered on the grill, the top and bottom of the plate seems to touch the car finish surrounding the grill.

It seems that a plate holder would not fit. Has anyone placed some form of soft rubber backing on the back of the plate so it does not scratch the grill and any edging on the top and bottom of the plate so it does not scratch the finish?

I Installed the original license plate bracket supplied with the car using Ty-Wraps.. The bracket sticks out about 2 incles.. The plate mounts on the bracket is is forward enough so it does not touch the body of the car. I've attached a photo which I took but it's a bit dark.. I'll post another photo tomorrow in daylight.. It looks great and does not block any air into the radiator..

To Videoengineer::.. Where did you come up with that?? I have 4 friends who are police officers and all say a clear cover is no problem.. As long as it's clear and does not prevent anyone from seeing the plate. In fact, 2 of them have them on vanity plates on there own vehicles.. I've been stopped several times ( to admire the car) and no one has said anything about the covers.. I have them on both front & back plates.. I just want to protect my expensive vanity plate..

What do your friends say about *no* front license plate at all?

Will they pull you over strictly for not having one?

None of them have ever been stopped so there was no reason to tell anyone they were cops.. And.. they have a combined 43 years on the job and none of them have ever pulled anyone over for clear plastic on there plates.. One said he has ticked someone for a purple cover which prevented him from seeing the plate.. And all 4 have stopped and ticketed people for missing front plates.. case closed..

Videoengineer.. Enought of this ********.. The law says the plates must be kept clear and readable at all times.. My plates are clear and readable.. My other friend who happens to be the police chief of my village said there is nothing wrong with a "clear" plastic cover as long as it clean..

Go find someone else to bother.. I've been driving for over 35 years and have always had clear covers on my plates because I like to protect them as I'm a license plate collector (member of the ALPCA) and I have NEVER been stopped ANYWHERE for having the clear cover..

State of VA is cool about having all the laws available electronically..

Just FYI here in VA

B. No colored glass, colored plastic, or any other type of covering shall be placed, mounted, or installed on or over any license plate if such glass, plastic, or other type of covering in any way alters or obscures (i) the alpha-numeric information, (ii) the color of the license plate, (iii) the name or abbreviated name of the state wherein the vehicle is registered, or (iv) any character or characters, decal, stamp, or other device indicating the month or year in which the vehicle's registration expires. No insignia, emblems, or trailer hitches or couplings shall be mounted in such a way as to hide or obscure any portion of the license plate or render any portion of the license plate illegible.

So clear covers are fine here

LOL, nice one! This is one of the few of these types of posts that provides actual backup information for what was said.

I like this type of defense. All you are proving is that you've been wrong for 35 years.

TThis is one of thousands of ******** laws on the books.. As I said before, Unless your plastic covering is dirty or in such bad shape you can't read the plate, There is no way you will get a ticket.. I think people who ride around with no front plate when it's required are taking a much bigger chance to get a ticket. With no front plate, your asking for trouble in New York.. New York has a law on tinted windows.. If you can't look inside the car from another car, your subject to a ticket but I've hardly seen this enforced.. It's one of those victimless charges and cops would much rather go after speederd, DUI and red light runners.. If Mr. Videoenginner is a police officed by chance, please tell me where yout jurisdiction is and I'll take a ride by and let you excersize your pen..

Default clear cover

You have to be kidding !Go get 'em k2we . I'm on your side . By the way I put my plate on with your tie wrap method . It's working well , but have you heard of any permanent bracket yet for the grille besides drilling either side of the tow hook ? If you do , please let me know . Thanks .

FrankieZZ

ps I have been driving for over 40 years in New England, never heard that one about not being able to have a clear plate cover . I belong to many clubs and do judging annually for 2 of them at concourses ,seems like 30% or more come in with them and no sign of a ticket to be found !

******** law or not, it's still a law. It's a law where I'm from too and I HAVE gotten a ticket for it. Yes, a clean, clear, plastic cover. The cop claimed it was the glare that the cover gave off when headlights hit it, making it hard to read.

You are right, there are a lot of stupid laws and they are often not enforced. This may be one of them. But it still a law and sometimes it is enforced. Now it's your decision whether or not to abide by it.
