20hp from 5 gallons of 100 octane mixed with 91!
Just got off the phone with my local tuner shop...
They had two Zs. One with intake, header, exhaust. The other, stock.
3 pulls on the dyno each. Then they put 5 gallons of 100 in to the tank of the stock Z from the local 76 (no MTBE either). Ran three pulls again. The stock Z MATCHED the modded Z in power! A 20hp gain!
The modded Z was running 91 from Chevron.
Of course next was to mix the 100 in with the the 91 on the modded Z! But then he had to go and that's all I got. They want to wait until it's all out so they can put nonn MTBE 91 in their along with the 100.
He says he has the printed dyno sheets as proof. I will try and get copies.

Higher octane would only help if the engine is knocking or pinging, but the Z has sensors so that it can run modify timing to compensate for lower octanes. If you put half 91 and half 100, that's probably going to even out to above the 93 rating that is recommended. So it might help. But the problem there is that the sensors would have still been calibrated to the 91-octane timing.

even if ECU could adapt to 100 octane gas, it would not happen on 2 pulls. Why would the engine suddenly produce more power? Doesn't make sense.
as a amtter of fact, that is the best way to screw up the catalytic converters.

P.S. I did find out the Z was from Alabama. Now we all know the gas in the midwest/east is a much better mix than the crap they shove to us herr in the west and even more so in SOCAL with CARB all over the mix. So it could just be possible.

Their method of testing violates the major rule of scientific experimenting. When determining causation, you can only have one variable at a time. In this case, they had two. The proper way to determine if higher octane adds hp is by first dynoing a Z using 91 octane. Then dynoing the same z using 100 octane and see if there is any difference, which I doubt there will be.
As for the stock Z matching the modded Z's power output. Sadly not all Zs are created equal. Some Zs will dyno higher than others out of the factory. It has also been shown that a combination of certain mods can lower your power output. There are too many variables to account for in this case. I find it sad how a local shop that specializes in modifying cars overlooked such a major point.

if the car gains any hp at all it'll be in the 5hp neighborhood - and that's somewhat optimistic.
People use it/race with it to avoid detonation because the car will be running hot and at the limit of safe rpm's a lot. It's kinda like engine insurance to a degree.
I'm sure there's some other factors about that dyno that weren't taken into account between dyno runs - that is if there really was a dyno. In some instances using 101 octane can hurt your car performance if the ECU doesn't know what's going on.
My dad put "racing fuel" (he didn't say what kind) in his grand prix once and it ran like total crap until he could gradually water it down with 87. It would stall, chug, idle weird, make odd sounds etc...
