I do this sometimes. It's funny to watch the corollas smoke me at lights.

It does work to save gas though. Man first is short!! I try to hardly use it, but then third is weird.

Try firssecond (new name) then third and fifth.

This is a little better for getting going (DARN impatient Los Angeles drivers!) The camry behind you shouldn't get too upset.

You know how many times I've been honked at by women in their clearly automatic cars and SUVs - - it's truly hilarious. I'd get going before the light too if all I had to do was let off the brake. I'm usually sitting in neutral though.

Unless I'm trying to really get on the fun pedal, I try to get into as high a gear as possible in as little time as possible (it's more like 1 - 2 - 5 (or 6)).

I never skip 2nd. Usually 1st, shift at 3500rpm into 2nd. Shift at 3000rpm into 4th. Then I rest 1 wrist over the steering wheel, and lean back.....

Skipping gears won't save you gas, keeping you rpms down will

I skip 3 a lot, but it's not really any kind of conscious attempt... just laziness.

Yeah, keeping RPMS below 3500 will do it.
