Auto Transmission Question
I have a new 2004 Touring 350Z with an automatic trans. I'm into the habit of shifting it from firts to fifth and down shifting through the gears also. Will the trans take much of this or am I going to have serious trouble in the future?

I like to say this because its true: our transmissions(AT) are freaking invincible. It knows if its going to break, it knows what is safe or not, and it can handle unbelievable amounts of power. Dont worry, ABUSE!

For those that don't understand, I shift from 1st to 2nd then to 3rd and so on. No I do not shift nor can you shift an automatic from 1st to 5th in one shift. I shift my AT because I like the sound of the exhaust as I go through the gears. I would have gotten a stick but in the big city it's just too much on my knees; I've had one before.

With most AT's I think shifting like that and driving it hard would just about cut the transmission life in half. But I believe, like Al said above, the Z's AT is designed for shifting. It better be since it's their motto! At worst, I think you'd probably kill it 20% earlier, which is probably longer than you'd own the car anyway.

I've got a friend with a VQ Pathfinder and it runs strong after 200,000 miles. Had another friend that just had to get rid of his VQ Maxima after 150,000 miles, the car ran fine, he just totalled it.
Its a VERY sturdy drivetrain. Have fun with it.

Guys I don't abuse my Z nor do I ever take it too close to red line on purpose. I just have a habit of driving it like a stick and that includes down shifting. I don't race it nor do I burn rubber. I was just trying to get an idea if it will be ok to drive it like that most of the time? Thanks for the feed back. By the way I've never kept a car for more than 36,000 and I'm over 50.

Funny about keeping your car....I am now on my 3rd car in 3 1/2 years. I just bought my Z 2 weeks ago and I love it!! I understand what your saying about shifting. I also have the AT/MT. It's like the triptronic. Shift until your hearts content, I do. My father is a service manage for Nissan. There are no concerns about shifting.
