Default MPG: The new Corvette vs 350z Mad as Hell

Would the experts please confirm or deny what I just saw on the Speed Channel.
Some guy was test driving the new Corvette, he said it gets 19 Mpg City and 28 Mpg Hwy!
I checked my window sticker on my 350Z and sure enough it says almost the same, i.e. 19 City and 29 Hwy,in fact Edmunds has the Vette with better highway mileage!
NOW WAIT A MINUTE HERE!
The new Vette has 400hp compared to the 350Z's 289hp!
What the hell is Nissan doing? They cant make a 289HP sports car with better gas mileage than one with 400hp?!?!
I always made fun of American Sports cars...NO MORE, I used to think the Japanese automakers were more technically advanced than the Americans...NO MORE.
You mean to tell me GM has produced a Sports car with 111hp more than the Nissan 350Z and the same or better gas mileage.
Tell you what....I dont care if the Vette is $50,000+...thats great horsepower, great looks, and great mpg.
All well worth the 50K.
OMG, no wonder Nissan can't figure out the tire feathering problems, has a mod unfriendly ECU, and an uneven air flow Plenum to the front two cyclinders.
Their idiots!
I am so pissed. And eating crow.
I guess the Americans do make better sports cars than the Japanese.
I should have bought a freaking vette with gas mileage like that!
Argh (screams and jumps off bridge).

Check the RPMs for the Vette when cruising in 6th gear, I heard its somewhere around 1800-low 2ks. Compare it to the 350z (don't own one, so I dunno)

The phrases "gas mileage and sports car" are an oxymoron!

I think its 287 HP for the non-tracks and non-35th, so you might gain a MPG for doing 2 HP less.

If you drive conservatively and do all highway miles you can get 27 to 28 MPG with the Z. I got up to 27.7 MPG doing all highway, could of been more, but it was getting borring to drive 65 MPH all the time.

That's it, I'm selling my Z and getting a C6....lol

Drove that thing at the "Auto Show in Motion" a few months back, and shizle my nisszo that car is fast & freaking low to the ground. I think first gear goes to 50 mph.... Though, interior feel is not as nice as the exterior. The shifter seemed kind of soft too. Exhaust note sounds nice.

Vince (thinking of the awesome time abusing the shiet out of those calvaliers, Matrixs, Civic SI, Saturn Ions @ the auto show in motion....ahh, good times )

I dont know if this has to do anything with this topic, but look at the 400hp 6.7L motor and the 3.5 300 hp from nissan. Hmm almost twice the engine size and only 100hp more. Its the hp per square inch that tells you about the car technology and get 21mpg with my Z easy..and 19.5 when im at WOT half of the day..what did GM do for 450hp..they went to a 7.0 motor...yeah you fuss about the mpg...go ahead and throw another 30k for a plastic cheap interior and a piece of crap technology..whats next a 600hp 10.0L...i owned a 97 vette and a Camaro...NEVER AGAIN!!!

This is my second Nissan that I thought could possibly have gotten better gas mileage. I had a 97 Pathfinder (SE-V6) that got maybe 17 MPG on the highway. I traded her in on a Durango with 5.2L (318), and got 18 MPG on the Highway along with almost 50 extra HP. I don't think the Z's fuel economy is all that bad. I've gotten 28.2 MPG before with it.

When looking at the window sticker, make sure you look at the range of fuel economy. The big number represents an average, but the expected MPG range could be very wide.

For anyone able to afford a C6 or a 350Z, I simply don't understand why FUEL ECONOMY is an issue. Horsepower, handling, performance, and the sheer fun of driving seem to be the reason we are interested in these types of cars in the first place. Didn't you know you'd be buying high octane fuel and that it costs more? Will an extra $10.00 per tank break the bank? If so maybe you should not be comparing the C6 to the 350z. Maybe you should be looking at Civics and Sentras. I love my ZR and really like the new C6. I want BOTH. Cash flow is the issue, not fuel economy.

VinUnleaded,

I had exactly the same thoughts, comments, and feelings as you about 6 month ago. I agree with your comments even now.

I came to realize that the Vette is more money, it is the first year out, it generally appeals to an older crowd, and you do not see it parked in most parking lots cause the owners are terrified something might happen to it.

You are correct about the Z's mod limitations, but no matter what you drive, somebody is gonna have something faster.

For me the 350Z is a fun, cheap, and stylish car to own and drive.

Eventually I might purchase a Vette, but I'm still driving the **** out of the Z and enjoying every minute.

At this point, GM must wish the only technical issues they have with their cars is a tire feathering issue. I guess you are not following the news lately???

My 2000 LS1 Z28 6-speed got 30+ mpg on the highway, so I wouldn't be surprised... I'll probably be shunned but I think the C6 is a better sports car than the Z (talking in terms of performance). It's also quite a bit more $.

BTW my non-supercharged '04 Xterra gets 15mpg and its slow as *****.

you would too get 30 MPG highway if your 6th gear was .5 to 1 ratio. i think 60 mph in 6th in the vette is like at 1500 RPM compared to what? 2300 in the G/Z?

Default REAK Mileage

350Z vs. C6 vette mileage...

Sure, the sticker says they get similar mileage - but those #`s are generated by a very unrealistic driving sample ( Zero miles of heavy throttle). In real-world driving, where a fun car gets the pedal pushed down a fair amount, the Z would definitely fare better than the vette. A vette can simply chug more air and gasoline. I`d expect a moderate difference b/t the 2 cars in a realistic comparo: Say 500 miles of mixed driving (short trip, long, fast, slow, light accel, hard). 3 or 4 would be my guess , with the Z doing best in the city stuff due to the vette`s super tall top gear.

Both cars are great, and the vette still deserves props for good mileage with it`s serious thumping v8.

Default Code to decipher unintelligible previous post

REAK = REAL

``3 or 4`` = 3 or 4 mpg difference between the two cars in question (city to city and hwy to hwy).

Long weak
