Default Stupid Litl Burnout

Just a quick question. I tried doing a burnout from a stop in my 6mt track. I got it to 6k RPMs, but when I let the clutch go, all it did was sit there with no wheel movement at all and then a VERY bad smell (almost electrical). Any ideas why this happened?? I just wonder if my clutch/tranny has some issues.

Did you turn off the VDC?

Did you maybe bog it? I find that sometimes when I run mine hard (especially now that I have a plenum spacer and JWT intake) that when I hit second after hard acceleration in first my wheels spin and it bogs the engine. I don't know if this is electrical (AKA VDC stepping in even though it's off) or not.

clutch was spinning, but didn't engage flywheel. You were smelling your clutch burn. Not good. You rev'd the engine too high.

I don't know how many miles are on your clutch or how sticky your tires are, but that's what it sounds like to me.

What you smell is a clutch and most likely a trip to the dealer for repairs!

dont "drop the clutch" at that high RPM. just act like your doing a regualr launch at 2-3k rpm but punch it real hard before your tires get traction. you probably burnt 1/3 of the life off your clutch by doing that depending on how long you tried....

Yeah, that definitely sounds like bad news for the clutch.

I think your clutch will probably be alright. I did that one time on another car. A Civic. The clutch didn't show any signs of trouble, but then again I totalled the car a few months later. I think you should be alright, but yes you definitely shaved off some of the life span of that clutch. Lesson learned. Have a good one.

+2 on the clutch, also this has happened with mine, the Z has a hydraulic clutch so if you rev too high and try and pop it or misshift it will hold the clutch in to protect the engine even with VDC off, and since it was holdin the clutch just like ridin your clutch thats where you get the smell

Do you think that is what's happening when I shift into second after running 1st up to redline? Or is that just wheel spin and bogging?

if youre talkin bout sidestepping and power braking, its not gonna happen. theres actually a fuse that controls it. do a search for the brake fuse. im not sure which one it is right now.. pop it out and youre good to go.

clutch most likely not slipping from 1st to 2nd, unless it has been burnt many times previously. You can usually tell when tires are burning, because rear end will fish tale. This will not happen if clutch is slipping(shifting from 1st to 2nd).

Yeah, the clutch hasn't been burnt hardly at all. I drive it like an old women most of the time. When I run it up in first and shift into second I feel some wheel hop for a second and then the RPMs fall off to about 3K and there is a hesitation then it climbs back up and I'm going again. It's weird. I guess I just have to get used to the little bit of added torque and not punch it quite as hard when I hit second. Thanks!

The boggling you experiencing when power shifting into 2nd is from the VDC controller. It is sensing loss of traction, so it turns on, disabling your accelerator. This is why the car gets sluggish and your RPM's drop. When it senses that your tires have regained traction, it allows you to accelerate again. In order to keep peeling out on a 2nd gear scratch, you gotta turn off the VDC button.

+1

I had that happen to me a couple of times when I first got the car ... then I figured out what the heck was going on. Nowadays I usually drive with the VDC off unless the roads are wet.

By the way ... to the guy who started this thread ... 6K??!! What the heck are you thinking? I can lay tracks at 2500!
