I rented a very similar video at a Japanese video rental shop here in socal but it was volume 11 (November 2002).

It had some cool footage but I wish I could speak Japanese. The only word I understood was "sportscar" but they used the word over and over. Does the U.S. version (DVD) have subtitles or dubbing? They had a cute model in a bikini (I think they always have a babe...)... The video also had a race at the end (FairladyZ version S vs. M3 vs. Skyline GTR vs. Boxster vs. S2000). The GTR smoked everybody but they declared the Z as the 1st place winner. Does this sound like the same footage as the DVD? If it's different, I'll probably get it also.

Last question: Does the DVD have any extras?

Yes, this is the same video. The GT-R was the official camera car, which is why it wasn't scored in the rankings. There are some extras after the various Z segements but I didn't find those very interesting. Overall, I would rate the video as a good buy for any 350Z owner.

I have just watched it also. The one I watched was Best Motoring Nov. 2002 VCD in the Chinese version. The Z handled great on the track. And watching the 333hp M3 having a hard time catching up to the Z in the straight stretch just makes my blood pumping! A must see video.

Don't recall the exact run time but I think it's somewhere around an hour if you include the extra segments.

I bought the English version here:

They video sent a mixed message... yes, the Z wins the "race" but there was a lot of comments on the understeer that seems to be built into the design of the suspension and chasis... I was sort of disappointed with the review... they basically said it was not a track car, but was good for spirited daily driving! I think one of the quotes from the video that bugged me the most was something to the effect of "you can consider the 350Z a sports car, in the same sense as a Miata is a sports car!?!"

Real sports cars are RWD with the right amount of OverSteer?!?!

Sad to hear, but it's true. The 350z, stock, is simply not a track car, as let's say compared to the S2000. It's better to have a bit of oversteer than understeer on a road course.

A couple of points.

1) The link I posted about gets you to ewa's main page. Do a search on 350Z and you should find the DVD.

2) The were a lot of confilicting comments in the video. I thought I remember them favoring the Z over the GT-R in terms of high speed manuverability during the stability tests.

The one driver out of the 5 that seemed to be the most critical of the Z was the driver was the older fellow. The one comment he made that I found most confusing was that he criticized the engine for only having a 6500 RPM redline. He then said that a 7000rpm redline like that found on the GTR was much better for a sports car. I find it amazing that anyone would use a 500RPM difference in the redline as key requirement for a sports car engine.

Relax guys, The Z IS a sports car . Everything between your front number plate and your rear number plate was designed as a drivers car. No compromise.
I purchased this dvd and have watched it 7 or 8 times. Its has fantastic footage, and some drivers are critical . But if you will notice the "older driver" does say it is difficult for him to comment on this car -- I take it he is a "Honda" man, as this is the car he races the Z in. He complains about the engine not being good enough, tires/rims not working with body, vibration in gears, overall he has not one positive thing to say about the Z.
Maybe he was jut upset that he couldn't keep up with a younger driver, in a newer car. Age does that to you sometimes.

Blue_350_z got it right.

The old guy (Kurosawa) is the most experienced driver, but not necessarily the best. He also tends to drive the fastest (most probably winning car) instead of the slowest (something to do with respect factor).

I have the video where he totally stuff up the Ferrari 360 he was driving. He probably complained about engine, tires etc etc etc.

Do note that the reviewers in Best Motoring give japanese cars greater preference over european/american cars. And because Honda is the only one with a "supercar", they would do as much as they can to endorse it. Bottom line, GTR is loved by all

My favourite reviewer is Tsuchiya, the drift king.

Smooth350 -- almost the first half of the DVD is devoted to the 350z, from under bonet inspection to complete removal of cover on rear strut bar to show structural rigidity. They go over the car quite well and the footage of Z in motion is great.
Very entertaining DVD for a Z fan.
