Can you chirp your rear tires going from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd?
Here's a question:
I have a track model with the 18" wheels and LSD. No matter how hard I try (with traction control on or off), I just can't chirp the rear tires under heavy straight line acceleration.
I remember the video of the test drive that Carl Merek (?) of Sport Z Magazine did of the base model and the chirping was evident in 2nd and 3rd.
Are there any other track owners out there or Tourings that can chirp the tires?
Just wondering if I'm low on power or not?

I'd bet it's because of your 18's and better tires. The base model Z doesn't have large enough or good enough tires to prevent it from chirping. Going from 17's to 18's is a huge difference. Getting even better tires is an even bigger difference. But I don't have my Z yet to say. Maybe someone out there with a Touring model can confirm.

I can chirp in 2nd in my Enthu. model, but don't be jealous. Chirping is do to loss of traction, and while 287HP isn't minor HP, the loss of traction is due to crappy tires / wheel size-not hp difference between your car and mine.

Mine barks violently and spins in first, yelps and steps out to the right hitting second, and will chirp hitting third (has even stepped out on me twice in third, but only if the tires are still cool)
I have the 17's though so it makes more sense. I actually like the slight losses in traction. Makes the car more fun to drive and makes me wish I wasn't upgrading to 18's/19's.....ohwell, I'm sure a FI solution will help break the bigger wheels loose when I want to.....

I can chirp my Touring in 2nd to 3rd but I must turn the VDC off.
While we're on the subject I did a 6th to 3rd shift w/ VDC on and the car hesitated a bit, just like an aggresive 1st to 2nd w/ VDC on. I turn VDC off ulness it's raining (or I forget)

touring is no problem to chirp 1st to second, it ussually will step out, its quite a pain, cause I have to wait almost a full second to let the revs drop to where they wont chirp. 2nd to 3rd can be achieved as well without much difficulty, but not as bad as 1-2.
this is in a 6mt of course, you couldnt do it in a automatic since it requires you to give it a bit more gas then you need to match the revs.

ok...just got back from a drive...
btw mine is a touring...stock 18's
easy to chirp 1-2, 2-3 is a lil more hard to do, but i can do it whenever i feel, and the VDC MUST be turned off to do the 2-3.
i have chirped 1-2 with VDC and after i switch to 2nd gear and floor it, it chirps a lil then the SLIP indicator flashes.
also i did a 6-3 downshift, double clutching just for the heck of it, and my vdc did flash, but just for a moment.
o well, thatnks for giving me another excuse to drive the car!!

Although I haven't done it, let my friend drive the Z (he's got a bit more experience with manuals than I), and he sparked it all the way through first, did a little more than chirp it from 1-2, and chirped em again from 2-3, but he was a damned fast shifter Then again, you could credit my dope RE040s!

I have screeched 1-2nd gear
I can get 1-2 with VDC on or off with my touring, I have even seen a 2-3rd chirp. but it was long time ago, I can 't seem to get it anymore. I wonder if its the 20s that I am rollin'.

I just got my Silverstone Track Thurday night and have already chirped 1st to 2nd w/o crossing 4000rpm with TCS on. Have not tried 2nd to 3rd yet. It's is more a technique and clutch thing if you want to do it below 4000rpm. If your clutch is hot it tends to slip more and it will be harder to chirp.

My tires bark more than chirp.. as someone else said is due to brief loss of traction.. Im sure if some of the manual guys beat it hard enough they could get a chirp from every gear..
I got a chirp from 2~3 once..I wasn't too pleased with it though.. (2nd gear ends at 75mph).. Id rather not be loosing traction going that fast..
maybe if your not hearing a chirp its because its not warm enough out? Tires have to be heated some before you get it.. or your not being aggressive enough? Just some ideas.

You guys should practice makin' yellow lights. Drop down to 2nd from any gear around 45mph, stomp it and dump the clutch. Me lika alot. Usually end up about 60-65 on the other side and the car gets squirly the whole way. Touring model.
Also, the base models do not have LSD's = easier to spin one wheel.

Just wondering if I'm low on power or not?

how to chirp
I haven't drove the 350Z yet but one recommendation I would make if you want a good 2-3 scratch is to not necesarily shift so late. Maybe I'm used to different cars but both the Civic Si I had and the 74 Z-28 (427) would chirp more if you shifted a little early. I laid a 75 foot long 2-3 gear scratch with theZ-28 going sideways. That was with N50's which are the widest street legal tire made. Damn I wish I still had that car even though it borke down every other week!
