I’m about to start upgrading my 2005 Z Track…
Looking for a suspension, roll bar, seats and harness, 17in wheels and plenty of slicks… 6-7000$
I’m seriously thinking of grabbing an Elise instead… Am I crazy?

Yes... an Elise is like a go-cart... I dont feel comfortable in that car at all. Plus with a couple of bolt ons you will kill that car. Or you can build up suspension and make it lighter and you will still beat it! but in the end its your choice! Good LuCk!

aesthetics aside the elise (and lotus in general) pay homage to a concept long forgotten by many makers of sports cars today - weight. the elise weighs in at just under than 2000 lbs. The 350Z weighs in at roughtly 3300 (do a search on the site for the different variations). The bottom line is this:
The Elise (or Exige, I happen to prefer the later) may not have allot of hp...but its weight, or lack there of, makes up for more than that in so many other places. Handling, breaking, acceleration are all enhanced by the absence of weight. Try putting this car through canyons...then try the z (both stock).
Where does that leave the 350? The 350 is rock solid at high speeds. Thats where I believe its weight + structural reinforcment come into play. That is not to say it cannot handle or is simply a strait line car. If you ask me...it isn't really a question of engineering (though i might have stated that earlier) I believe, in this case, its a question of what company had to compromise more. The z being a high volume production vs. the elise meant engineers of the later were able to specialize their car beyond the restraints of nissan engineers.
Just some points to think about.
(oh and i still <3 my z).

you are crazy .. because even after all of the mods you've listed .. your still under the cost of an Elise... dont get me wrong.. its a wonderfull car .. but .. not worth the cost of ownership.
I test drove an 05' lotus Elise a while back and it was FUNNNn however i dont think that i would like to step into that car every day i had to go somewhere... very crampt and not very luxerous at all... and im 5'8"... i would take the elise for a weekend over the Z ANYDAY!!! however... for a car that will be my daily driver.... the Z is amazing... catches peoples eyes fast fun to drive and its just an allaround more ummm sensable car, an elise is for somebody that will put 200 miles a month on it.... both are amazing cars tho (i had to choose between the elise, another M3, GTO, or a streetbike and my Z.... i obviously chose the Silver R6 and the SIlver Z!!!! modd your Z and dont catch yourself putting down the low points of your car, many people would trade you cars ANYDAY
I think the elise looks VERY sporty... i would have bought an elise if i had a daily driver (and more money)... and would prob end up buying a lotus product later on in life... they have the right idea for a seriously fun weekend car.
A Z with a nice body kit looks better than an elise IMO. But the elise is much more rare than the Z (i see 3-7 Zs every day). In terms of performance, a modded Z could get elise performance for less money. The elise only wins in terms of rarity and weight. The Z is definately my choice and I'm sticking with it
an elise turns heads but in reality it is just too small and has too little horsepower. with some mods and suspesnion upgrades, you could easily kill an elise. I have beaten an elise in drag racing completely stock. I was pulling maybe a car or two on him. a modded Z is much nicer and less expensive than a elise IMO.

IMO the Elise like some other exotics simply tries too hard in its design; maybe
I'm just more conservative b/c I like the subtle, sexy boldness of the 911.
Looks more like a cheap hot wheels car than a true exotic. Don't get me wrong
I'm not coming down on it in terms of performance, but I believe the $$ on one
could be much better spent on something else. That said, it's actually not that
expensive compared to the like of M3, Boxster S, C/C4, etc. But I see those on
the road here all day long. Even ferraris (I am right down the street from Ferrari
of Washington).
So not sure it's the $$ that are keeping people away.
