Default magnetic

I have seen magnetic oil drain plugs and was wondering if they realy work the way they say. It seems like they would, but Im not sure it is even a worthwhile mod. Any comments?

There standard with the engine in my planes... IO-550 (fuel injected 550cubicinch) 310HP and in my beaver Pratt Wintney Wasp jr radial 450HP.... everytime I change the oil, I keep telling myself....Holy $hit, if those deposits were not being caught where would they go???? I would assume that the same theory applies to our cars....

I have one on my 97 gmc sierra and have to clean the magnetic drain plug everytime I change the oil. It really is amazing how much metal it gets from the oil.

If there are metal filings in the oil, the magnet would catch what? About 1 percent?

So that would mean I have about 1/8 pound of metal in 4 1/2-5 quarts of oil. I would say it probably catches 75-80 percent. No way or really knowing but it has to be more than 1%.
