Default flywheel?

Hi all,
I was just wondering if you hear a sound(I think the flywheel) revving up when you downshift into 1st. This happens with the clutch still in. It sounds very race-car like, but is the first car I've had that seems to do this and I was wondering if this was bad for the car? This happens when I'm moving forward, downshifting from a higher gear to first.

Thanks,
Johnny

Why on earth are you downshifting into first gear?

Coming to a stop sign mostly. I don't downshift into first very often.

you should never have to downshift info first unless your like 1-3mph. if your going that slow....just pop it in neutral and use brakes

If you're familiar with stock and aftermarket flywheels, yes, you can hear the flywheel: it has a distinctive sound. Is hearing the flywheel BAD for the car? I don’t understand the question?

Have mercy Johnny, sell the car to someone who can drive and understands a M/T!

Haha, trust me, I've driven many cars in the past, including racing Formula Dodge's. It's just that this is the first street car I've driven that spools up like this. But yes, my question was whether or not this was bad for the car. I'll post pics of the car soon. It's an '06 track model...which I plan to track.

You do not hear your flywheel. You hear first gear spinning up as the syncro furiously tries to protect first gear from clashing. I also agree with what people have been saying about this being dumb. There is almost no reason to ever downshift to first on the fly.

Since the ratio of first gear is so high, downshifting into first will cause more synco wear than most other gears because it has more work to do. The reason you do not hear about the first gear syncros wearing out is because no one abuses it like that.

Run away, I suggest you go back to Dodge, they are looking for a few "good" drivers, like you.

Last time I checked, this was a forum. And since I couldn't find this topic in a search, I posted it. I was just wondering what the sound was, and if it was bad, the few times I have shifted into first. If you have nothing productive to say, please don't say it.

My advice is sound and productive, you just choose to ignore it. Dodge is still looking for some abusive testers to push their transmissions to the limit. In this regard, you truly are "da man"

okay, go ahead and downshift into first, it probably will be no problem. Better yet never shift out of 1st gear, then you don't have to worry about downshifting at all. You're right, that is much better to respond in the positive way.

Now I feel totally stupid. I have rarely down shifted to first when stopping but when I did I hear the noise. I thought it was normal but TRUST ME after the abuse poor johnny got I have learned my lesson. Thing is when I decelerate in 1st, 2nd or 3rd I hear a similar whining sound once the tach gets around 3500 rpm and less and stops when I depress clutch or gas. Only happens when sloowing down not really using the brakes. Dealer said it was normal and I havent concerned myself with it for 15k miles or so but now im wondering. Any thoughts?

He was not talking about noise when decelerating. He said when he was shifting... That is the syncros. When you are engine braking, all you hear is gear mesh and that IS normal and not a bad thing. On the other hand, using a syncro that was only meant for shifting from reverse to first or from 2 or 3 to first at VERY slow speeds (near stop) at 25 mph is not normal.

Ok, I see. The only time I shift to first was when I was decelerating to a stop sign. My habit is to come to first shortly before I stop so I don't have to worry about shifting once I take off. Usually I don't hear the sound, but the few times that I was about say 7 mph, I did hear it. Now that I know it's bad for the car, I'm not going to do it, I never supported doing it, was just wondering what it was.
