flywheel?
Hi all,
I was just wondering if you hear a sound(I think the flywheel) revving up when you downshift into 1st. This happens with the clutch still in. It sounds very race-car like, but is the first car I've had that seems to do this and I was wondering if this was bad for the car? This happens when I'm moving forward, downshifting from a higher gear to first.
Thanks,
Johnny

If you're familiar with stock and aftermarket flywheels, yes, you can hear the flywheel: it has a distinctive sound. Is hearing the flywheel BAD for the car? I don’t understand the question?

Haha, trust me, I've driven many cars in the past, including racing Formula Dodge's. It's just that this is the first street car I've driven that spools up like this. But yes, my question was whether or not this was bad for the car. I'll post pics of the car soon. It's an '06 track model...which I plan to track.

You do not hear your flywheel. You hear first gear spinning up as the syncro furiously tries to protect first gear from clashing. I also agree with what people have been saying about this being dumb. There is almost no reason to ever downshift to first on the fly.
Since the ratio of first gear is so high, downshifting into first will cause more synco wear than most other gears because it has more work to do. The reason you do not hear about the first gear syncros wearing out is because no one abuses it like that.

okay, go ahead and downshift into first, it probably will be no problem. Better yet never shift out of 1st gear, then you don't have to worry about downshifting at all. You're right, that is much better to respond in the positive way.
Now I feel totally stupid. I have rarely down shifted to first when stopping but when I did I hear the noise. I thought it was normal but TRUST ME after the abuse poor johnny got I have learned my lesson. Thing is when I decelerate in 1st, 2nd or 3rd I hear a similar whining sound once the tach gets around 3500 rpm and less and stops when I depress clutch or gas. Only happens when sloowing down not really using the brakes. Dealer said it was normal and I havent concerned myself with it for 15k miles or so but now im wondering. Any thoughts?

Ok, I see. The only time I shift to first was when I was decelerating to a stop sign. My habit is to come to first shortly before I stop so I don't have to worry about shifting once I take off. Usually I don't hear the sound, but the few times that I was about say 7 mph, I did hear it. Now that I know it's bad for the car, I'm not going to do it, I never supported doing it, was just wondering what it was.
