Default SS Camaro vs. Z

hey,

my step brother has a 1999 camaro ss and he is convinced that american muscle, especially anything with a chevy v-8 is trash. m3's, sti's, ferrari's, whatever you can name he would probobly think its trash and then proceed to explain why his ss is so untouchable. he even maintains to me that chevy lied about how powerful the car is/was so that it would overshadow the corvette. my question is this: stock for stock, how would a 03 350Z stack up to his SS. im just curious to see what you all think.

btw, i couldnt disagree more with him about how awesome american muscle is.

SS will smoke the Z in acceleration, even the regular z28. The HP is underrated, he is correct.

Handling is a different story being the Camaro has a solid rear axle.

The LS1 has loads of low end torque as well.

Unless he sucks at shifting and you are really good... he will walk all over you. You are comparing 240whp to 300+whp... you won't have a chance.

I've got to think that what you were thinking and what made it to the keyboard aren't quite alike.

His Camaro SS has more than enough to whip a stock 350z in a drag race. If the guy is your step brother, arrange to drive his car. Its a completely different experience than a Z. Scarey torque. Loud. Poor road manners. Those are my driving impressions. I actually think they're fun to drive, but I wouldn't want to own one as a daily driver.

Ive raped 2 camaro ss with few mods, and i have to say even if it were stock, i would still get beat by at least 2 cars... Traction is one of the hardest things for the ss, so ive heard from the owners. Ls1 in general will smoke anyone straight top speed... the topend is WAY better. I raced a wrx and smoked him by 2 cars, and out of nowhere a ws6 flies by me unmodded xcept ram air, easily as can be.... So as far as ls1 is low end torque i would have to disagree with that considering ive drivin an Lt1 and an ls1 and the lt1s lowend was way better then the ls1, but topend wise ls1 is just sick...

The LT1 is a little more of an even match to the 350Z, which is on the previous gen Z28's. The LS1 as stated it's no contest.

i dont actually have a z as of yet, i have driven a few though, and a plan on getting one in february. i ridden in camaro plenty of times and the tail breaks loose effortlessly and it is definitely a stright line car, not meant for turns of any type. and it is uhh-gly, not to even mention the interior with the two spoke steering wheel. i would never consider getting one, but i was just curious as to how much quicker an ss would be from a stoplight than a z.

safe driving,
james

A 350z track or possibly a base with a 6sp vs. a 99 Camaro SS convertible with an auto would most likely be the only close 1/4mi race. The 99 SS convertible auto runs 13.9 according to Car and Driver magazine. A lot also depends on the drivers.

My good friend has a 99 Camaro SS convertible auto with 3200 stall converter, SLP lid/intake, SLP loudmouth exhaust, 315 drag radials and some other small hokey stuff. He runs 13.3 in the 1/4.

I just picked up a 05 350z base 6sp, I need a few mods to catch him but this summer should be very interesting when we pull the cars out!

Well its actualy a prety big misconception that the fbodys cannot handle, when road and track did the sibling rivalry test it lapped better times than a honda s2k accura NSX and porsche boxter. The only time they get unseated is when there is a bump in the corner, when I still had my 99TA which had LT headers exhaust and a few intake mods, I destroyed a stillen 350z on the highway. those ls1's are no joke most dyno between 290 and 310 at the wheels.

I still find it funny that a V6 is putting out nearly as much power as a v8...

It can be a drivers race up to a 1/4 with the upper hand going to the SS Camaro. I've race quite a few of them. I've won some and lost some. It will come down to who has the better R/T pulled with a good 60ft time that will determine the out come of the race. I can tell you right now that when I race one with slicks when I pulled a 2.0 60ft on my stock potenza's. The SS only had 1.5 car lengths on me and it held me there and it didn't gain no ground. Let one of these with F-Bodies guys come in here and say you beat the driver and not the car. With all the variables I mention far as R/T and 60ft time that will prove who is the better driver and who needs to work on mastering their car. On a roll I haven't gone up against an SS camaro or any car with an LS1 engine but I've heard the rumors that, that motor is a beast on top end. I've beat an LT1 Formula and repeated spanked it on top end w/ a vid to prove it can be done on a roll with just a popcharger and good driving. I say good luck and practice!

You can bet that MOST modern American muscle cars are faster than the Z. Face reality guys.

I mean d@mn we hate the mustang but the fact is that it has more power than a Z:
