I recently had my front 18'' touring wheels refinished after the dealer scratched them while doing the tire feathering TSB. I was told they sent them out to a body shop to have the paint matched since there is no paint code from nissan for the wheel silver alloy color. When I went back, the color matched but they looked dull so I had them send it back to have the clear coat put on. They came out a perfect match, with no noticable defects.

Wurth makes a silver allow spray paint that is made to match Porche, BMW, Merecedes standard siver alloy color wheels. Can't say if it would match Nissan's color.-

They also have a High Gloss Clear Lacquer for the clear coat.-

Here is an excellent article on how to paint and repairing painted wheel curb scratches.-

Yep, those touring wheels that you have are painted. I found that out the hard way when I was getting new tires and they gouged my wheels (not a Nissan Dealer). They sent me to a body shop where they were painted (surprise to me) and came out perfect.

Since, I have a couple of chips (origin unknown) on another wheel and touchup paint might be just the trick.

I suppose I could ask the body shop where they got the paint, but it's probably mixed for spraying and only comes in quarts.

Why is it that they can't do a tire job without damaging the wheel? Last week I had a slow leak in the rear tire. After my experience with the Nissan dealer, I was paranoid to say the least. I took the car to Discount Tire Co. since they sell custom rims there, I figured they would know how to handle them. I spoke with the manger and explained to him that my rim had no defects (and asked him to inspect it) and expected it back in the same condition. I asked him if he could repair the leak without damaging my wheel. He reponded 'we do custom rims here all day long' and assured me it was in good hands. As the tech was putting the wheel back on the car I was standing next to him and noticed the rim had been scratched. He called the manager and he explained it was what they called a 'duck-head' where the machine they use to remove the tire has a rubber piece tip which sometimes collects debrie from other tires and will then scratch the rim. I said. wouldn't it be a good idea to clean it after each use? He said the techs sometimes forget to do it. He said he would order me a new rim to replace the one they had damaged at their expense (which I had him place on the invoice). The new rim should be here Wendsday so I am holding my breath and crossing my fingers they can do a proper job this time

Yeah so why is it the dealers can't replace the tires without gouging the hell out of the rims????

Does anyone know if it's the machine or the tech that's likely responsible? I would like to know for future reference. TIA

It is the combination of poor equipment and an inattentive technician. Some places will try to handle wheels that are simply too large for their outdated equipment. But I believe it's mostly careless techs. There are places like wheels america or Ye olde wheel shop that do this all day w/o any problems.

Yeah check my thread here about getting the edge of the rim roughed up:

https://my350z.com/forum/wheels-and-tires/175980-a-question-about-tire-mounting.html

doubtless i won't be going back to the dealerships to have tire mounting done if i go aftermarket.
