There were minor changes mid-year. The most definitive way to tell is your VIN#. Search the forum for details. Also, 2004.5's have knee pads on either side of the center console near the radio, as well as a power outlet under the passenger dash area.

VIN Number as well. Run a search for "VIN number 2004.5" and you should come across a thread that lays out the numbers.

I originally found the official distinction between the two on the nissan-tech.com site. You can tell in the VIN numbers:

2004 Nissan 350Z Coupe/Roadster (Coupe VINs up to D*4T160000,E*4T060000) (Roadster VINs from D*4T102001 to D*4T110000 & from A*4T002001 to A*4T010000)

2004.5 Nissan 350Z Coupe/Roadster (Coupe VINs from D*4T160001, E*4T060001) ( Roadster VINs from D*4T110001, A*4T010001)

04.5s have a revised suspension with increased rear spring rates and better rear dampers. I believe the roll bars are slightly different as well. Other 04.5 features include kneepads, an additional power outlet, and possibly some minimal changes in the interior plastics. Look for the kneepads, they are your best bet.

Some of the '04.5's have the new tire tread design & larger size sun visors.

My 2004.5 at 20k miles on stock 17" tires had no feathering.

The ECU is also changed to be ULEVII in the 04.5 model.

2004.5, look for the knee pads on the center con., had feathering at 4K miles, tires replaces by Nissan for free, 19K on the OD now with NO problem

The unfortunate answer is, it depends. If you go with the OEM tire (Bridgestone RE-040), it's likely (assuming that an alignment didn't cure the car) that the problem will come back. Many people have had success by simply going to a non OEM tire and getting a good alignment.
