Just hit 1200 and found that the rev limiter is gonna be annoying
I went over 5500RPMs for the 1st time now that its been broken in officially and on a 0-60 run I was quite annoyed at the rev limiter kicking on at about 61 MPH.. I have no intentions of going over the redline but now when I try to shift at the redline I have to shift just under it or risk bogging off the limiter! I think it should be set to 6700 or 6800 to allow some leeway. My friend's fast reving 2002 Celica GTS's redline is 7800 but the limiter kicks on at 8400!
Where does your rev limiter kick on? Is it right on 6600 or just below for everybody? I am gonna have to shift at 6500 to avoid the limiter, not that its a big deal.

Best times don't require a redline shift. Max torque in fact, is in the 5000s. Besides, 1st gear is very short and you're maxed in 2nd at 60. I'd suggest you shift between 6200 to 6500. Quick 1st, a nice smooth 2nd followed by a terrific 3rd and you are moving...
Yeah,
What hfm said... Look at someone's dyno torque curve and you'll realize that winding it out to redline is probably going to make you marginally slower than shifting a little earlier. Torque peak shows up in the late 4s and winding over 6 starts to show the line falling.

I haven't tried this in my car yet but according to the owner's manual the rev limiter can be set from 2000 to 8000 rmp. The 6600 rmp is preset by factory. This should get rid the annoying indicator light. Give it a try ... good luck!

nooo... thats only the shift indicator.
and the celica has 4cylinders, much easier to let that rev than a V6. just like the mustangs V8 is redlined at 6000 I think.
all cars max at a tad over 60 in 2nd, manufacturers do this for better 0-60 times. but its not very good gearing ratio. for example, the RSX-S with 200hp and like 140lb torque has 62 in 2nd. you think the Z with 87 more hp and like 120lb more torque should be geared the same? hell no. but same goes for us. the best gearing for overall speed, not shooting for that magic 60mph would be like a 50-55mph redline in 2nd. that would give us better gearing for 3rd, rather than a huge RPM drop from 1st to 2nd, and then a shorter one to 3rd.
anyway, they cant just "raise the limiter" tho an aftermarket ECU will do just that, the car can maybe hit 7000RPM, but you run the risk of bending a rod from over revving. to do it properly you have to get new valve springs, balance the engine, ect. to ensure it can spin that fast properly.
